Absolutely Disgusted
« on: June 21, 2011, 07:21:34 PM »
What is it with Rednecks, idiots and big fish.

I've just had a very reliable report that the locals have caught on to some fun in the Boyne.  After the "gurus" told the world how they'd discovered the big barra in the Boyne, it seems some less than credible locals are making a sport of it.  Wearing wetsuits, they're kayaking up as far as they can and then walking up to the pool below the wall.  Hand spears are then utilised to kill some the couple of hundred XOS Barra that are in there.  It seems that sadly, GAWB Rangers no longer work "after hours" so it's a bit of a free for all.  I don't suppose DEEDI officials up that way work late either.  I simply cannot understand the mentality that thinks this sh!t up.  Hey, in the past, and in the future, I may or may not have snuck into areas where you are not supposed to fish and caught and released a few, but to go in there and spear the poor bloody things is disgusting.  I guess the bastards that are doing this don't read anything on here so I can't really tell them how I feel.

I fish because the little voices in my head tell me to.

Good one Dale.

What would be the logistics in catch and re locate these fish.

I am sure we could find  enough helpers.

Pretty close to impossible to catch a metre long barra and relocate it Gordon.  The water board could get the excavator back and dig a trench into the river I suppose.

Hand spears generally bounce off a big barra if they're trying to spear one in the water.  When you hear that there's a run on spearguns from the sports stores you'll know what's happening. Seen exactly what you're talking about happen before.

Wouldn't be something Fisheries would love to get their hands into?

I reckon you'd get more helpers if you tried relocating the spearfisher..persons

hi guys
im currently on annual leave, and prior to this i have taken every conceivable to ensure the fish below the spillway have been erradicated.  as dale has mentioned earlier, i have moved a heap of earth below the spillway to get the majority of fish out of the pool in the tail race, and ensured a sufficient channel is created further downstream for the remaining fish to exit.  i have been back several times over the past month since excavations have been completed and i think it has been a success (it difficult with the water level receeding so quickly to come up with an extraction method).

havent heard to much about the spearo's but i have heard of other idiotic fishing activities that would spin you guys out.  a couple have been confirmed, if this activity is true i will endevour to catch them over the next couple of weeks.

the hatchery staff have moved a heap of fish out of this tailrace area and relocated them into the boyne (none to the dam for biosecurity reasons), and has been a major job especially when all fish collected were captured by line.

cheers
kh

I am not up to scratch on the technology, obviously, what is the biosecurity factor that Kurt mentioned ?

Dale, it doesn't matter where you go there's alweay got to be a redneck element somewhere. People who do illogical things like this are probably so stupid that whatever you might say to them would be met with a threat of some kind. Ideaaly being able catch them at it and then use the spear guns as an enema would be good. Fisheries and the Police need to be notified, because apart from the stupidy factor using a speargun in an estuary is an offence anyway. Realistically we are probably fortunate that so many Barra got down to the salt.

the biosecurity issue that i have mentioned is relating to the cross contamination of pathogens that have been detected on fish in the boyne river.

I know that you are miles ahead of the rest of us on the the scientific side Kurt and like taking Shrimp and Lobbies to another waterbody is not advisable for the same reason.

But what efects do the other polutants have on our natives.  Cattle roaming in the streams that have been recently dipped for ticks and dosed for internal parasites.  Farmers fertilizing along the river flats.  The list goes on.

Over 20 years ago we had a holiday at Jackadgery, up stream on the Clarence and we were advised not to drink the water back then.  The Bass still survive in the upper Clarence today.  It makes you wonder what it would have been like with out our influence on these rivers.

Gordon.

Basically all the water mobs are absolutely paranoid about introducing any bugs from outside their dams in to their system.

Way over the top if you ask me, but better than not being protective enough!
Basically they wont let you introduce anything in to their water that might possibly be an issue. Obvious one for fisho's is live bait, particularly shrimp.

Annoys me because their requirements are much higher than that set by DEEDI, which basically allow you to move stuff around to your hearts content as long as your in the same catchment.

Kurt,
Would Flexibacter columnaris or Saprolegnia species be a pathogen of concern ?
Endemic in the river below our dam, never worried about returning salvaged fish which often have it. Euthanase any poor buggers that are in a bad way.

cheers
Steve.
