G'Day Pilly,

Some cracker Saratoga there mate, they're an awesome fish. Thanks for posting the pictures.  :thumbsup

Are you fishing the Nagoa River there? Water looks nice.

Cheers,

fitz..

Hi Fitzy,

Thanks for the reply.
It's not the Nogoa, it is a creek that runs through a mates property. I'm not sure what its name is I will have to find out.  :-[ sorry.
The Nogoa is always very dirty due to all of the muddy water flowing into it from Lake Maraboon  :( it's a shame because it could be a really nice river to fish otherwise. I have heard of Toga being caught in the Nogoa but I have not tried myself.

Regards
Adrian

G'Day Adrian,

Thanks for the reply.  :thumbsup

I know toga get caught in the Nogoa River through town there at the weirs (tho I've not caught them there myself) & further downstream towards the Dawson/MacKenzie.
Do you know if there's any in the Nogoa River "upstream" of Lake Maraboon or in the lake itself? I'd never really thought about it before....

Cheers,

fitz..

Hi Fitzy,

You must have read my mind as only yesterday I started looking into accessing the Nogoa river above the dam. They would have to be in there mate as they were present in the river before the dam was constructed. I am going to do a trip and have a look soon apparently you can access the river off the Tambo road fairly easily but I am not sure of the rivers condition there (fishability). I have found them in the Mackenzie, just waiting for the river to settle down a little bit more before I drop the punt in and give them another go. Have you ever fished the Nogoa river?

Cheers
Adrian

Hi Steve,

I was stoked to get Toga of this calibre on my first attempt. The biggest fish were around 750mm (only had a carpenters measuring tape at the time) and the smallest one was 500mm. All caught on lures, some on my home made ones as well. I have pulled a couple of sooties out of the creek also here is a picture of one caught on one of my home made lures.

Cheers

Awesome stuff Pilly!

How good are Toga's, a fantastic sports fish, their colouring is spectacular and best of all they love taking artificial food off the surface, being very visual.

Some nice specimens there mate!!!

Cheers Dave

G'Day Pilly. The Sooty throws things into a spin a bit. Can I ask what system/catchment you caught it in? They were introduced into Funnel Creek (part of the Connors River) years back & have spread down into the Connors, Isaac. Im interested to see if they've moved into other systems. Been hoping the dirtier water might stop their spawning in other rivers...

Cheers,

fitz..

The Isaac Fitzy. Who put the Sooties into Funnel creek was it a stocking group or a farmer? Does Funnel Creek flow into the Connors River or does it flow to the coast? I have crossed the bridge over Funnel before and thought it might be worth a look pretty steep banks though if I can remember right? Does the dirty water limit the movement of the Sooties and do they have a negative impact on the other fish in the area?

Cheers
Adrian

G'Day Adrian,

Thanks for sharing the info.  :thanks

I believe it was our fisheries Dept who liberated sooties into Funnel Creek. Funnel flows into the Connors River which then joins the Isaac River then meet up with the Southern feeder rivers to become the Fitzroy west of Marlborough.

It is hoped the Sooties will hit the dirty water of the Fitzroy and not like it, or at least not be able to spawn in it. Sooties will probably dislocate the native middle order predator fish in the system which is the Fitzroy strain Golden Perch. I've been fishing in various tributaries of the Fitzroy since I was a kid, I've seen numbers of Goldens drop off over the years; espcially so in the waters where the Sooties are. Sooties are a world class fighting fish pound for pound but at what cost to the local species?? Fingers crossed they don't establish in the Mary River (SEQ) to the detriment of Mary River Cod, Bass, Jungle Perch etc....

Cheers,

fitz..

I was hoping to catch a few Yellowbelly in the Isaac but I don't like my chances now :( . That was a very infomative reply Fitzy and I love hearing about the history of stocking into our dams and rivers. Last year my cousin pulled a metre plus Murray Cod out of Lake Maraboon, what were the fisheries thinking when they put them into that dam? :o. Fitzy I would love to here more about your adventures fishing the rivers of the Fitzroy Basin.  :youbeauty

Adrian
