Boomi kids ‘Get Hooked’ on fishing
30 Aug 2013 - NSW DPI

Students from Boomi Public School in the State’s Far North West had a lesson in the dos and don’ts of fishing during a special school visit this week.
Department of Primary Industries, Schools Manager, Recreational Fishing, Amalia Brohier said the incursion was part of ‘Get Hooked...It’s fun to fish program’, which is funded from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust.

“The ‘Get Hooked’ program is an education program for primary schools that aims to teach children about sustainable recreational fishing and habitat conservation,” Ms Brohier said.

“DPI staff visited Boomi Public School to introduce students to freshwater fishing, the significance of aquatic life and life-cycles and the importance of sustaining a quality fish habitat.

“Students learnt the practical aspects of fishing including rod and reel basics, knots and rigs, bait selection and identification, fish identification, fishing regulations and catch and release techniques.”

Ms Brohier said the ‘Get Hooked’ program encourages children to take an active role in the management of their waterways and fish stocks.

“Last year 89 schools and over 5,400 students from across the State participated in the program,” Ms Brohier said.

“Once registered schools receive a program manual, a DVD and an interactive discovery based 'Get hooked - it's fun to fish' kit involving hands-on activities and games to cover topics such as fishing safety, habitat protection, fishing rules and responsible fishing.

“’Get Hooked’ is a fun and exciting way for kids to learn about of one of Australia’s favourite past times.”
