TOURISM MINISTER HAS NO INTEREST IN RECREATIONAL FISHING

F F S A Q INC. Freshwater Fishing and Stocking Association of Queensland Inc.
MEDIA RELEASE 13th July 2012

Jann Stuckey, the Queensland Minister for Tourism, has dismissed the activity of recreational fishing as a contributor to the tourist industry in Queensland.
Robin Caddy, the President of the Freshwater Fishing and Stocking Association of Queensland (FFSAQ) is astounded by the Minister’s admission. FFSAQ recently wrote to the new LNP Minister informing her of the role that FFSAQ contributes to local communities by providing opportunities for recreational freshwater fishing.
The Minister was informed that the Recreational Fishing Enhancement Program is creating economic benefit to local communities, and is also contributing to and playing a significant role in promoting tourism across Queensland.
Recreational fishing in Queensland, including freshwater fishing, is a significant social and economic activity in the State. Government surveys indicate that there are 800,000 fishers in the State of Queensland. The number of interstate fishers is not known, but considered to be substantial. The impact that both these local and interstate fishers, has on, or has the potential to have on, the tourist industry in Queensland, has to be immense.
The Minister responded to FFSAQ by indicating that recreational fishing did not reside in her portfolio responsibility. By this statement, it is quite clear that the Minister has no understanding whatsoever of the linkage between recreational fishing and tourism, and even more so to the potential economic and social contribution that this linkage creates, Mr Caddy said.
Queensland has a lot to gain by creating productive recreational fisheries and thereby contributing significantly to the tourism industry.
But the Minister just does not get it.

I cant belief FFSAQ were stupid enough to put out a press release like this. Minister makes a simple statement saying the subject is not the responsibility of his portfolio and they beat it up into a cr@p press release.
They'll never get another interview with a minister again.

A bit harsh calling FFSAQ stupid.  I think Jann is a female minister.  The problem is not that fishing doesn't reside in her responsibilities, it's the fact that she didn't make any attempt at answering the question, she palmed it off.

Nothing wrong with giving parliamentarians a bit of stick I do it all the time and sometimes get results instead of platitudes.
They frequently need reminding that they are in an elected position to represent our needs and not to sit on their bums and look after themselves.
If she was my representative I would be requesting that she still look at the proposal and if it was not relevant to her portfolio at least pass the ball with her approval to the correct minister for action.
Cheers

‎Dale I've been writing to the state Govt for many many years now about the value of rec fishing and tourism and since the LNP was voted in have received replies from the Premier, the minister for Fisheries Tourism and National parks.

They all say pretty much the same which amounts to very little and they just go round and round without any substance. From what I've received in replies so far this govt is just as bad as the last Labour govt we had they just don't care for some reason and just don't understand the value of it,

Campbell Newman launched Destination Q here in Hervey Bay yet allows the netting of a Marine Park Conservation Zone to continue which is the only Conservation Zone in this country where netting is allowed it was just another political stunt imho They are all lieing air stealing grubs that are in politics for their own gain and not for the people as they say.

Yeah probably, what they should have done was turn it around, IE "Minister, if you dont see the value / relevance to your portfolio, how about we go away and do a paper on it for you to show how valuable it is to inland communities and come back and present it to you in a month".

Then they could have crowed "FFSAQ to do inland fishing tourism paper for minister" in the press release, and they would have had another appointment in the diary.
Basically first point of political lobbying, find a way to do something for the politician, if it gets them brownie points or a photo in the local rag even better.. Find a way to piss them off and the door is firmly but politely shut.

The idea would be to keep stringing it along, so at the meeting to present the paper sometime in August, "Oh Minister, did you know this young fella had a lure expo at Fernvale the other day, 5,000 visitors (voters) visited Fernvale over the weekend! Then the same bloke, bit of a mover and shaker in fresh water fishing circles,  is holding a kayak fishing convention next month at Wivanhoe dam, would you or the local member on your behalf, be interested in coming along to this fine example of inland tourism driven by fish stocking activities and presenting the prize? Expect local press blah blah blah. (apologies to Fitzy for thieving him as the example)

Then after suitable preening by pollie about getting there mugshot in the local rag,  go along for another visit. Maybe then spruce one of the bigger barra comps in the lakes, like the Monduran one, its a biggie, lots of attendance, or just talk up the number of people visiting the barra dams in October / November,  just keep it all rolling along, giving them opportunities to look good or get value, and sooner or later they might realise that a bit of work on their part might make these little photo opportunities into bigger photo opportunities and you set the hook and wind in slowly........

Well put and if that fails then hit them on the head with a pick handle.

:Nothing) Binder, have you thought about becoming involved with FFSAQ?  They could do with someone with new ideas on the committee.
