Fisherman puts life at risk wading into waist-deep, crocodile-infested water at Shady Camp on Mary River
CRAIG DUNLOP -     NT News -  January 13, 2015

A FISHERMAN has put his life at risk by wading into waist-deep, crocodile-infested waters at a popular Top End fishing spot.

Other fishermen say they were dumbfounded by the behaviour of the man, who spent “at least 15 minutes” in the water at Shady Camp on the Mary River – a spot known for its barramundi fishing.

Jason Rogers, who photographed the man in the water on Thursday last week, said there was a 4m saltie in the area, which was lurking within 50m of the man.

“It’s just crazy, you don’t go and do something like that,” Mr Rogers said.

“It’s just common sense.

“He was off in the distance, and we just stopped fishing and watched him, hoping that nothing bad would happen.”

Senior wildlife ranger Tom Nichols said the man was lucky to get out alive.

“It’s mind-blowing, I just can’t understand why you could do something like that,” he said.

“To put it simply, he’s a f**king idiot.”

Mr Nichols said that the Mary River had one of the densest crocodile populations in the world, and crocodiles were particularly aggressive at this time of year.

“Going into the water like that, it’s only a matter of time before you’d be taken,” he said. “Not that you’d see it coming.”

Mary River National Park ranger Emma Jackson said there was clear signage warning people to stay out of the water, and that rangers regularly patrolled the area.

“Unfortunately we hear regular reports of people going into the water when they’re fishing,” she said.

“We patrol often, but we can’t be there all the time.”

Making matters riskier for fishermen, Mr Rogers said fishermen had increasingly been dumping fish waste on the river banks.

“They fillet their fish and just leave a big pile of fish guts,” he said.

Mr Nichols said that such behaviour added to an already risky situation.

“People don’t realise that they’re putting other people at risk,” he said. “It’s an accident waiting to happen.”
