Title: NPD 2/10/10.
Post by: rayke1938 on October 03, 2010, 10:52:18 AM
Been busting to get back there since last Tuesday but the forecast has been lousy with 3 trips cancelled. Graham went in his boat and I met up with my goumet decky Ty ( Hot fried rice for breakfast thanks alicia )
As forecast it rained but very little wind.
Got a lot of shrimp on the way down with a curious audience at one stage they would have only been a boat length away.

We saw a few fish on the sounder so pulled up for a fish and I promptly scored a nice sized bass.

Followed by another. Nothing for Ty or Graham .
This is where son Binder and granddaughter Erin pulled up next to us and I gave them a handfull of live shrimp. Erin was soon squealing the place down as she pulled in a PB bass of 52 cm.
Graham headed off to try somewhere else as we moved around a bit for no joy so we decided to try greener pastures.

We arrived at Grahams spot just in time to see him get a double hookup so we anchored near bye ( Read on top of him)where we also started to get into them.

We decided to call it a day around 11 am as the rain had eased off but it still looked threatening.

The wind got up a bit on the way back but as it was from behind us so we picked up a bit of speed.

Usual feed of redclaw on the way back.
Total score between Ty and myself was 34 bass with 5 over 50 so it was worthwhile getting a wet bum.
 Cheers
Ray

Daughter was very impressed, the remaining shrimp are in the tank, and I have orders for tasking her out next saturday! SWMBO said something about her brothers wedding rehearsal, but I think fishing sounds better.

You can buy shrimp, (not cheap!) but not to use in most dams these days. Most of them now stipulate any bait used must come from the dam itself. Usually a few shrimp pots overnight along the edge of the weed beds will score more than enough shrimp for a session. My problem is I dont get out there often enough to run traps, the poor buggers would either starve to death in the pots, or get out,  between my trips, which is why I bum mine off Ray  :thumbsup for the rare times I use shrimp (which at NPD means you actually want to catch a fish, lures are less than successful there at the moment!)

Unfortunately I'm no real help. I haven't used bait in over a decade but concede live shrimp can be very effective in some locations; in others worse due to the by-catch. Try dragging weed at the start of the day, I used to do that years ago if I wanted a few shrimps...

Cheers,

fitz..

Mat if you want to purchase shrimp in bulk ( Min order 50 shrimp) Contact Rod Hutchings at Aratule Redclaw farm on 0754638226. He does a delivery run to Brisbane and surrounds on thursdays. He normally arranges bto meet you at one of the aquarium shops. Price was $30 per 100 last time I got some but that was last year. The size of them can vary a bit.
If you are going to trap your own please practice good hygene with your pots and shrimp as there are some very nasty noxious weeds in some of the dams. Kurwongba has cabomba which is very nasty and easily spread.
Cheers

Sel, there are forkies in there, but rarely caught. I got one 4 years ago, been about 5 others reported since I'm aware of. I suspect some mongrel tossed a few in there a while back and its only a matter of time.

Permits from here, plenty left.
