Narrandera Fisheries Centre harvests almost one million fish this stocking season
20 Apr 2012 - NSW Fisheries

Harvesting of the last larval rearing pond at NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) Narrandera Fisheries Centre on Monday morning will bring the total number of native fish harvested this season to almost a million.

These fish are bred and released to enhance recreational fishing in NSW and for conservation purposes and are part of the NSW Government's efforts to maintain the State's quality freshwater fisheries and to restore threatened species such as trout cod and Macquarie perch.

The 40,000 golden perch fingerlings harvested on Monday are being transported to the Murrumbidgee and Edward/Wakool Rivers for release on the 26 and 27 April.

NSW DPI Narrandera Hatchery Manager, Matthew McLellan, said the stocking program was assisted with funds from by the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust, which was supported by the recreational fishing licence fees.

“Since 2000 the hatchery at Narrandera has stocked more than 12 million golden perch, 4 million Murray cod, 3.9 million silver perch, 590,000 trout cod and 7500 Macquarie perch into waterways across the State,” he said.

Mr McLellan said the hatchery was accredited under the 'Hatchery Quality Assurance' program, which ensured the stocking of high quality fish.

“Throughout the stocking season, running from December to April, the fish are released into waterways following consultation with the recreational fishing community and acclimatisation societies, who also help with fish releases,” he said.

Mr McLellan said anglers have always wanted to know how many of the restocked fish survive and contribute to the State‟s fishery.

“In an effort to provide the answer, the hatchery is currently in the third year of a five-year 'Effectiveness of Stocking' project run by Dr Lee Baumgartner from the Narrandera Fisheries Centre,” he said.

“The project involves marking fish with calcein, a harmless fluorescent dye, to allow discrimination between hatchery stocked and wild fish and measure stocking successes”.

Sites involved in this research project include Burrinjuck Dam, some river sites in the Wakool River (Deniliquin), Murrumbidgee River (Narrandera), Murray River (Tocumwal) and Copeton Dam (Inverell).
