Heavy rain options
« on: January 24, 2012, 10:36:49 PM »
With so much rain fallen  (375 mm last 2 weeks) and a reported 3-400 mm yet to come in the next week or so what options do I(we) have to chase bass in the near future. I'm wondering whether it is worth the effort to hit up one of the dams e.g Baroon or Borumba where the influence shouldn't be as dramatic as the streams but am thinking this amount of rain will probably adversely affect the dams as well. I've noticed that in small "lakes" the weed edges stay cleaner and warmer after inflows of water where the main central body is cooler and dirty so common sense would tell me that the fish would move into these areas for comfort being more stable. So I'm thinking weedless presentation in these areas may be an alternative. I would love to hear others ideas on this. Cheers Pat

Stay at home and tie flys or make lures

Some of my best days fishing Lake Samsonvale as a kid were at the Kobble Creek inlet just after heavy rain.  Floating worms through the floodwaters down past the eddies had the spangled and silver perch going nuts.

Cheers fellas I reckon the suggestion of tying flies/making lures is about the most sensible thing to do I was just interested in whether anyone actually gets out there. Was in my local fly shop yesterday and Gav fished Borumba on Monday only a day after the rain started and the Yabba and Kingham arms was already starting to discolour so would be cactus now. I've clocked 360 mm since Sunday last and checked my local "lake" which was three feet above normal and flattened grass and hung up debris indicated it got about five feet up. I just hope the bass don't go elsewhere. Cheers Pat.

Going to hit up North Pine just to loosen up the ol casting arm tomorrow. With the dire forecast for the next week its probably the only window of oportunity I'll get to get out before my holidays finish.

I took advantage of the break in the weather to head around to NPD today.  Went up to the Kobble Creek inlet (which, after more careful inspection of the SEQWater maps, I see remains open to fishing).  The water was quite brown with lots of debris and maybe 30cm visibility.  I expected another day of nothing but tilapia, but was pleasantly suprised.  Two very nice sized bass, three eel-tailed cats (tandans), sixteen small-to-medium gar - and just one small tilapia.  A pleasant change from the old days, when you could catch whatever you wanted as long as you wanted spangleds or tandans.

These were all taken on bait, but I did get a few hits on a 4" soft plastic minnow - just no hook-ups.

Oh, and also scored a "personal worst" for the smallest fish I've ever taken on a line: a baby gar, well under half the size of the soft plastic I was playing with earlier.

Between the other people there, I saw close to 10 good-sized bass and just one undersized.

Woke up to solid rain, high rain overnight in the catchment, going back to bed, no fishing today!

Did the same thing myself ... i wasn't so unlucky tho i had to fence up in the hills of the border ranges today so my washed out plans are not so detrimental
