Ewen Maddock Dam Fish Stocking
« on: February 07, 2011, 06:13:43 AM »
G'day all,

Well just after only 8 months since Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc. was formed I am proud to announce that this up and coming Saturday our group will be releasing a mixed bag of species of about 30 000 fingerlings containing Australian Bass, Golden and Silver Perch with the prospect of stocking more Bass in the very near future.

All members are pretty excited and we are looking very forward to the first release of any fish in the lake for over a decade.

Cheers Dave

Well, what can I say, being part of this awesome group of members is just fantastic.

What a morning, it has been a long time coming and finally today we were rewarded for all our efforts.

A huge thank you to all involved in todays proceedings, to all our members you have been working tirelessly fundraising, to our sponsors, SEQ Water, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Queensland Govt. Dept's for assisting us in this project. It was fantastic to see all the kids getting involved as well. They were released all over the lake along the edges of the dam wall and by many kayak trips across the lake.

Here are a few more shots of this morning.

Yeah mate, more exposure which is great,  that news story should view on either tonights or tomorrow nights local news on channel 7, Sunshine Coast.

If anyone knows how to capture the story, by taping it some how and loading and saving it on a computer it would be greatly appreciated. We would like to use it to put it up on our website.

No laughing at me neither, I'm not used to that media business, when I was conducting the interview I had so much information I wanted say along with giving our sponsors a wrap and the govt. depts for grant moneys we received. My mouth was as dry as a dead dingoes backside and all I could think of at the time was, "I need a beer right about now." Who knows how it will be edited.

As I don't have a video camera or recorer, if anyone can help in regards to taping or even videoing their television while the story runs on the 7 Local News article that would be fantastic.

Cheers Dave

Dam stocked with fingerlings

THEY'RE each just a few centimetres long but within 12 months they will be a major tourist drawcard for the Coast.

And a very tasty drawcard at that.

A total of 26,000 fingerlings – give or take a few hundred – were released into Ewen Maddock Dam yesterday in a move which should make the site a fisherman's paradise.

The 17,500 Australian Bass, 8500 Golden Perch and 3000 Silver Perch were introduced to their new home by members of the newly-formed Ewen Maddock Fish Management Incorporated (EMFMI).

The group was founded eight months ago with the aim of restocking the dam and attracting anglers from surrounding regions.

“We chose Ewen Maddock Dam because we are all locals that enjoy fishing in the area. We noticed the fish stock was getting low, and decided to do something about it,” EMFMI president David Brace said.

“We all love the sport and want more people and families on the Coast to be able to enjoy this great resource.”

Mr Brace estimates it will be a year before the fish are large enough to catch.

There are existing stocks of native fish in the dam, including some over 50cm long, but the addition of the 26,000 fingerlings will help EMFMI achieve its goal of ensuring the sustainable management of the stock.

The group has been working with local authorities, the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation, and SEQ water extension officer Steven Brooks to create a five-year management plan for the dam.

“We've chosen native species that will adapt well to the environment here,” Mr Brace said.

“We are releasing them in different spots around the dam to ensure the ecosystem in one area is not disrupted by the introduction of a large number of fish.”

Mr Brace said any freshwater angler would tell you what stood it apart.

“It's just unique. Something different from the more popular saltwater fishing,” he said.

Many members of the association and their families were present for the release, with the children enjoying the kayak paddle to release the fish in different areas.

Well done Mr Brace & co.  :youbeauty

Well thanks Bracey to you and your team for making me and my family feel very welcome last Saturday.

I heard about the restocking the previous weekend when Greame was chatting to Nugget on his radio program.I was going to the dam on that Saturday 12th with the family for a paddle and a quick fish,so I was hoping the kids could get involved somehow.

Well when we arrived we met Greg and later on Greame and Dave and also a few others but didn't catch there names.
We all got involved and transfered the fingerlings on our yaks with a lot of others people. The kids were so pleased to be able to transport them to parts of the dam,get on the CH7  local news tonight and a couple of pics in this post  :youbeauty

So again  :thanks to all,and the wife enjoyed herself and the company that much were rocking up to your next meeting.

Cheers Steve,Sheridan,Andrew and Emma
