Quick Vic report
« on: February 03, 2015, 11:53:37 AM »
hey guys.
Lake Bullen Merri near Camperdown is fishing well for chinook salmon to 1.5kg. This lake can go from clear to blue-green algal bloom in a couple of days so best bet is too hit it soon before it gets hot. It's been an unseasonally cold January and the fishing in this lake has been fantastic. Fishing your baits and lures deep has given best results.
Wurdi Buloc Reservoir near Moriac has pumped out some whopper redfin to 51cm over the last few months but be prepared to pump a lot of casts into the lake before you register a big one. Soft plastics bumped along the bottom have done the damage here.
The Barwon River in Geelong has produced redfin to 900g on lures and live minnow plus carp to 4kg on corn and bread. For the redfin, cast you lures parallel to the bank side weed and keep them close to the bottom where possible. Live minnow can be trapped using a collapsible bait trap with a bit of white bread inside.

Hi Peter.
Southern Vic does not enjoy warmer waters preferred by golden perch or cod so we have to make do with what we can. I'm reporting for those who may be interested since this site covers all locations in Australia.

DEPI stock plenty of natives here in Vic and I've provided a link in the news and press releases forum as well as salmonid stocking.

Estuary perch have been doing well in some of the stocked lakes in southern Vic so these fisheries will provide a welcome change to salmonids and redfin. Bass were trialled in Bullen Merri but their growth rates were fairly slow and low.

cheers, NS

Growing up in North Eastern Victoria, if it wasn't for Redfin and Trout the fishing would have been pretty quiet in the 60s and 70s.  I guess you could argue that if Redfin and Trout weren't there I would have been catching Maccas and Yellas and Cod, but I mainly caught Reddies and Trout.  I still enjoy a good feed of Reddies too.

I blundered on some old fishing map yonks back and it had Lake Colac as a "good Murray cod water" and the Barwon in Geelong has having "good populations of Macquarie perch".

thinking about today's quarantine laws, I doubt we'd get permission to release trout in Australia (if there were none).

That's true Slates, my Dad used to fish for Black Brim in King River near Mum's family's farm at Edi.  We'd know them as Maccas now.

I've heard silver perch referred to as bream/brim before too. Mainly on the Murray

Yes, Silvers were Brim, Maccas were Black Bream.
