Tagging? - Good or bad?
« on: December 27, 2012, 05:46:23 AM »
Been wondering this for a while.
I've not caught a huge amount of tagged fish, maybe 20 odd over the last 5 years?

But one thing I have noticed is a lot of  those fish had an open sore / ulcer where the tag was, cant remember any of them having a nice healed scar around the tag shaft.

Is this just me being on the wrong side of the odds, what have others noticed? I've gone right off the idea of tagging lately because of it.

I'm even toying with the idea of how to remove a tag without doing the fish to much damage to let them heal when it is particularly gangus looking.

The one I caught did have a bit of a sore around the tag, wasn't sure if it was just a one off

Yes it did, tag placement is not ideal.

Mostly bass, seen a yella or two, certainly all in fresh water.

The main problem is placement, tags(most of which are too large for the fish tagged) are handed out to people with no training with instructions as to how place them which are not ideal.
Must admit I have removed tags from poorly tagged Bass
Tagging Yellas outside of their natural range is pointless.
Tagging Toga is a ridiculous concept.
Tagging Mary's(with dart or anchor tags in their natural range) should be banned.
Couple of days ago removed the anchor and 15mm of stem(no tag) from a nasty ulcer in a 68cm Toga in Kurwongbah.

A wise man once said to me, if you caught a cow, and stuck a star picket through its back and into its ribs, and then let it go, would it live its life the same as if it didn't have that spike stuck in it?
We know that in times of flood, stocked Bass and Barra will escape from impoundments and head to the ocean.  We know that Bass are slow growing, and Barra are fast growing.  We know that Golden Perch should not be put in lakes on the eastern side of the Great Dividing Range.  We know that Mary River Cod almost died out in exactly the same conditions that we now hope they'll thrive in.  What are we trying to learn from continued tagging?

The cow analogy can be misleading and untrue Dale. A T/anchor tag properly placed between the internueral bones of the second dorsal of a Bass high enough that is in an area with no muscle movement causes no problem. Clear the area of scales before insertion and keep the equipment sterile and the wound heals with no infection. But to be be honest I have seen some shockers where your analogy IS apt. Only tag Bass for two research projects now myself. In the rustwater only tag Threadies in the River for a research project though do tag some bycatch Jew,Snapper,Cod,Jacks(as the gear is set up) yet to get a return from a Thready, doing ok with the bycatch though. The thing with such data is those who keep it can never get enough, IMO the funding and effort directed at stocked fish would be better utilised elsewhere.

Like I said to Bill Sawynok years back when discussing tagging in Somerset, where is the sharing of data for management purposes? There is none, hence I cannot & will not support a tagging program on Somerset, Wivenhoe or any other lake unless there is a valid reason for the tagging other than just ansa members to get a certificate on the wall. A couple of members of Kingaroy Sports Fishing Club called me all the so & so's under the sun at a meeting over this (Yes I did hear about it lads & memories run long), bully beef boys.......... Stabbing fish just to get a certificate on the wall is all wrong, shw me a vaild reason for tagging a specific species at a specific location & I'll happily support eg Dumaresq River Cod Research Program.

from a biologist perspective, for impoundments i would say it is less than useless to tag fish, with the only exception of spill events.  nothing against bill's work with his r&d projects, but the funds would be better off going to fingerlings.  i find it a waste of time to have a tagging program when at least (and i you can quote me) 99% of taggers do not know how to tag.  i have seen it time and time again, and they provide more of a corridor for infection than anything, and half of the time they don't even get reported when retrieved.  much better technology is out there at the moment.
just my thoughts and experiences.

I've been pretty lucky and caught about 9 tagged fish in the last 12 months. All salt water (except the murray cod that we had only tagged 4 hours before re-catching it). All had some degree of a wound but some of the tags appeared to have been there for years without any significant damage.
I'll be honest, I stopped reporting my tagged catches after the 3rd time they promised to send or email me the info and didn't bother to do it.
