Title: Brisbane River , 3 weeks after the flood
Post by: Novice on January 30, 2011, 09:32:03 PM
G'day,

Took the kayak out for a spin at Wivenhoe Pocket today. Launched from the bank , at the end of Shines Rd. This puts you in just downstream from the junction with Lockyer Creek . Alot has changed , hardly any snags protruding from the middle of the river , the water colour , bucketloads of dead fish and heaps of collapsed river bank.

Some may be wondering whether the log jam upstream from Lowood is still there , well it is now alot worse . Impassable and a dangerous trap for the unknowing downstream traveller . The entry to this narrow section almost gives you hope that one could pass , but the fast flowing water will quickly take you to the largest gumtree domino set in the brisbane valley . A gravel and sand on-foot bypass is the only safe way through . There is a smaller channel which is just as bad a little further downstream , give it a miss too .

Here are some pics , I took a fair few so they will be in multiple posts.
ps. the house at the end of Shines rd had 4 ft of water through it at the height of the flood.

Cheers,
Dave.

Amazing pics David, gives a real feel for the amount of water that came down.
Camerons Crossing (the log Jam) has always been a hazard, The alternative (portage) is where we camped overnight in 1977 on a canoe trip from O'sheas Xing to Indooroopilly with the YMCA (before Wivenhoe)
Last time I was through there (2001) I had to hurdle a tree in the Crawdad punt at 6hp 1/2 throttle on the way upstream to Wivenhoe pool. Give the locals maybe 2 months before they take a chainsaw to the worst of the jam. They seem to have done it for years..

Thanks for the piccies mate.  The unknown fish is a Carp.  Not a European Carp and not as damaging.  Great to see that the Powertails have survived too.
