TV fishing
« on: April 09, 2011, 08:12:44 PM »
A while back there was a lot of discussion about sponsorship of fishing writers, well this time I'm on about certain TV shows; one in particular actually, Andrew Ettinghausen's show. I believe that ET has taken product endorsment and sponsorships to a new level. Unfortunately a lower one. This show along with one of ET's mates Michael (Pirtekman) Guest just seems to be a rolling billboard rather than an informative fishing show. While I understand that sponsors make these shows viable, I really can't see why we have to be constantly bombarded. Toyota are a major sponsor, and that's fine but mall of these so called road tests are in reality just another Toyota ad. Likewise the endorsements for Coleman, Shimano, etal that are thinly disguised ads, or advertorials if you prefer. I was always a big admirer of ET when he played league, but now he seems to be just another cash cow. Sorry mate but I think you've dropped the ball.
At the moment I prefer to watch the hyper active antics of Paul Worsteling and his show IFish. At least it's all fishing and we all know that he's using the show to promote Tackleworld. Smart bit of work really. Unless they bring back "A River Somewhere" I guess we are stuck with commercial reality because it pays the bills. That said, I'm looking forward to the re-appearance of the blokes from Tassie on "Hook Line and Sinker" they just wanna have fun.

TeeVee used to be entertaining, I hardly watch the commercial networks any more.  ::)

There's some stuff on community TeeVee that's watchable, Scott and Lee from adventurebound.com.au, make me laugh.
In a recent episode Scott hooked a treble through his thumb, while surface popping for Kings of Portland VIC.
Lee cracked the shits as they were over a big school of salmon that was on the boil.
He asked Scotty if it (removing the treble) could wait until he boated a salmon  ;D

I was surprised that they showed the treble through Scott's thumb without the usual "Warning some viewers maybe distressed"

Cheers

Yeah I used to long to watch as much Fish TV as I could once but I have to agree they are way too commercialised. These days I catch the occassional show on Briz 31, I have seen a few different ones on there, I don't know the name of them but they are good to watch.

I instantly turn off on any show that has barra fishing as we have seen it all before, give me Bass. yellowbelly, cod and estuary species and I'm hooked...

Cheers

A couple worth watching are River Monsters on ABC2 I think, Wednesday night, and at the same time there is another one on HD 1.  Sadly, if it wasn't for the sponsorship we wouldn't see the Australian Fishing shows.  They have to pay their way somehow.  With ET it's Shimano and Big W, with Rex it was K Mart, even A River Somewhere had Sage I think.

Hi Dale,
You're right about the commercial neccessity for sponsorship mate, My grizzle was more about the way ET works everything into what have come to be known as advertorials. Other than that I don't have a problem with presenters fronting up for a product, but the actual fishing side of it should be kept free of blurb. What do we get next? ET catches big fish; "This Salmon was bought to you by KMart."

From what i have heard from some folks within the ET camp is that ET actaully had to front up with some serious cash per episode for a few season before channel 10 even took it on at no charge.

I believe that it is only this season that channel 10 is starting to pay them to have the show aired.

For this reason its not wonder its a consistant ad.

There are however some pretty great shows in community TV (Bris31) here in brissy that are worth a watch, of which adventure bound is one.

Cheers,

Lee Rayner is the best angler currently going around on the box.
There's not as lot of classy rodwork amongst the rest, what with highstiking, hand swapping. etc., etc.
Lee and his mate have a entertaining and informative presentation style. Their programme is refreshing in  that
it's not trying to sell you stuff or send you somewhere.
And best of all, Lee's one of those blokes able to do it without a guide or charter boat.

Creek to Coast on 7 Brisbane just had a nice segment on fish restocking at Lake Maroon  :thumbsup then turned the segment into an advert firstly for one of the several tourist parks (didn't mention the others) & then for some brand of caravan. I changed channels at that point........

I don't mind the advert within content (advertorial), but openly state what it is IMHO. If John Laws did that sort of stuff without ringing his bell there'd be hell to pay. The general public aren't idiots, they shouldn't be treated like one.

fitz..
