Put a permit under the tree this Christmas
News release | 17 December, 2012 - DAFF

If you think catching a big barra would make your loved one´s holidays all the more jolly, then put a stocked impoundment permit under the Christmas tree.

Fisheries Queensland manager Tony Ham said purchasing a stocked impoundment permit for a Christmas present was a simple process, and a great gift idea that would last the whole year.

"It's easy to purchase a permit-you can order online, purchase over the counter at a number of outlets throughout Queensland, or call 13 25 23 to order one over the phone," he said.

"Permits cost just $37.30 for one year or $32.40 for concession card holders."

Mr Ham said the holiday season was a perfect time for families and friends to enjoy the benefits of freshwater fishing.

"Many of the Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) dams throughout the state are full and ready to be fished," he said.

"Fishers of all ages and skill levels can enjoy freshwater fishing.

"There are 32 dams on the scheme, with a range of species available to recreational fishers.

"These dams are well known as some of the best places to fish for iconic freshwater species such as barramundi, Australian bass, golden perch and Murray cod.

"Most of these dams have great facilities where you can camp, buy bait or fishing gear and swap tips with the locals."

Mr Ham said fishing at a SIPS dam was a sustainable fishing option.

"Fishing at a SIPS dam means you will be helping to sustain native fish stocks, with 75 per cent of the funds from your permit going back into restocking the dams," he said.

"This means fishers who purchase a permit get to choose where the funds from their permit are allocated.

"The local economy also benefits from visitors to the area.

"Enjoy the dam fishing experience this holiday season, and don't forget to keep your permit on you at all times."

For more information and to purchase a SIPS permit visit www.fisheries.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23.

Must of changed their rules, tried buying a permit for someone else a couple of years ago and they wouldn't have a bar of it.
