Townsville Fishing Report 08-10-2015

Going by all reports the wind has been playing havoc with the fishing locally, and a lot of people have been doing it hard. The only consolation for lure casters is knowing that when this bit of a lull is over that the fish usually comeback with a vengeance, and just in time for Barra close season. The deeper snags have been doing alright and live baits, deep soft vibes or trolling deep divers close to the structure is the go when there are fish present on the sounder.

There's a lot of weed in the lower parts of some rivers and this is fouling lures, gathering on lines and choking live baits as it slides down the line and builds up on the hook also. In other words, it's been a really good week for boat and tackle maintenance.

After talking to a few mate, even the upper reaches didn't fish very well either, and there have been lots of casts made for little result. At this stage it looks like the wind should drop down on around Monday hopefully, but that could change at the drop of a hat for better or worse. The river mouths have had a few nice Finger-mark coming through, and using live baits like Herring have been the most successful. If you can get a few decent sized prawns in the net, you never know what might grab them, and they're top notch bait for a wide range of species. I've seen some nice pics of Barra coming from some of the rock walls this week too, and it's the hard bodies that have been doing the damage. The 90mm Scorpion in the 4m model has been very effective and slowing the retrieve right at the age of the rocks is important to make the most of an interested fish.

I've heard that the Mack’s are thick when the bigger boats can get out there early, and Chin rigged Gar and Wolfies have both been taking fish on the slow trolled baits. The shallower reefs are holding some nice Reds, and Largies up to 9kg have been taken by those using large fresh baits. Reef Jacks seem to be on the chew and travelling and I heard of a 90 cm model that was taken last week. Apart from that, not too many people have been getting off shore so the reports are a bit thin.
