Season opener
« on: September 12, 2013, 03:05:27 PM »
I decided to wait a little to avoid the rush and went out yesterday arvo down the Wilson River. I got on the water about 2.00pm and travelled down river past the bridge at Whyralla, then began to fish my way back up. It was pretty quiet for most of the time until I got smashed by a bloody great carp. It self released near the boat so I continued back upstream. Just before 5.00pm without a score on the board I poked my nose into a little creek mouth. Just on five I got hit by a 20cm baby Bass, then a few minutes later a bigger one (38cm) smacked the lure off the surface before I had a chance to wind it. That was great so I persisted and pulled another baby of about the 20cm size. By that time there was the business of getting back to the ramp to considered so I called stumps.
Pretty happy with that and christened the new PX 68 reel as well.
Cheers,
JD

Not a bad finish JD.

That 38 bass is a good size wild fish, fat as also.  8)

Thanks Fitzy, I was surprised how fat she was too. Had to be a post spawn fish that had fed up big. The creek I fished goes way back but is blocked by a fallen tree. In flood time the Bass get up there out of the main flow. A mate of mine lives not far from it and he reckons you can hear the Bass chopping on the surface at night. One of the reasons I love river fishing.
