31.10.2010 Borumba Dam
« on: November 01, 2010, 08:52:12 PM »
Sunday morning 4.45am saw the EMFMI crew hit the water again. With a good nights sleep
(the yobbos were unusually quiet due to being told that they would never be allowed back
plus I was absolutely knackered after having covered 12km in the yak) under my belt I didnt
feel too bad except for the bung back.Sean had kindly offered to take me out in his ProStrike
again for the morning and was pretty keen to see me break my duck with regards to toga. The run
up the dam to the Borumba arm saw my eyes watering from the cold foggy air.
The three boats fished various sections of the arm with no real success and it was decided to make
the run to the top of the Yabba arm.We managed to wend our way up through the drowned bottlebrushes
before coming to a dead end.Fishing back out to open water saw only one strike when a small
bass had a shot at Seans popper.Sean guided the boat down into a small back-alley
behind a stand of lilies after we saw a few swirls close to the edges. As we rounded the corner
Sean laid out a long cast down the alley and was rewarded with a strike and hookup from a small fish
By now I had switched to the fly rod and was working along the edge of the lilies but without
success.Sean picked up another fish and had more strikes on the popper but I couldnt take a trick so
I switched to a rather dodgy shrimp type dahlberg Id tied.
We switched banks and were working along the lilies when we spied a swirl in behind them.Sean
encouraged me to try throwing the fly in there and it was smashed second go.Quickly stripping in I felt
weight and managed to drag the fish out over the lilies and into the open water where I let it have its head.
We were treated to a couple of cartwheels before I brought the fish into the boat.
A quick pic and the fish was released.
We worked our way down the bank and across into another bank of lilies before the wind picked up with
an approaching squall and things went quiet.
We motored back down to near the junction to fish a small bay before heading home where Sean got
another nice Toga and I dropped a small fish on a skitterpop.
Then it was back to pack up and head for home.It was great weekend with the chance to get to know fellow
stocking group members a bit better and the first toga on fly an added bonus.

work like you dont need the money and fish as though you dont need to eat

Awesome weekend Dave, so much fun jambed in the time we had.

Graeme an I were glad to witness your first Toga as we knew how hard you had been casting that fly over the weekend. :youbeauty

Couldn't ask for a better weekend, fish were caught, the weather was great, a few laughs around the campfire and great company.

We should do it more often?

Well done!

Cheers Dave

Well done Dave  :youbeauty
Good to see you blokes at the EMFMI getting of to a good start, will have to organise a combined stocking group trip sometime.
I was hoping to head to Monduran for the weekend of the 20th but with rain forecast I might just make it an overnighter to Borumba, would love to catch my first Toga.

Cheers Andrew

When you're in your yak, just let that Dahlberg drag along behind you while you fish the threadline.  You may be surprised.....

The term is "Harling" and there's nothing with it, in fact Basser is right, it can be a very effective way to catch a saratoga.  :thumbsup

Awesome pics Yakfly & nice hat BTW.  ;)

Andrew, your idea of an inter-group gathering has some merit. Maybe raise it in the Stocking Group board, think most of the guys from both groups who are on here are listed as Fish Restockers. If someone isn't please let me know & I'll add you to the user group.  :tick
Can also raise it at our (S&WFSA) next meeting if you'd like to raise it as an agenda item.

Cheers,

fitzy..

I'll bring it to the table at our next meeting in early December.

If we can come up with a place and a date with a bit of notice sometime in the new year, sounds like a great idea.

The Wildeco Adventure Park on Ewen Maddock dam is available for weekends such as this if this is concidered as an option. Camping is $12 per night or for the dorms, $18 per night per person. I just don't know how the fish will play.

Thanks guys, I will bring it up at our meeting next week.
Dave that sounds like a good idea, I would think that not a lot of our members would have been on your patch of water.
We may be able to look at inviting other inetrested stocking groups to attend. It could turn into an annual stocking groups get together. Always looking for an excuse to fish & socialise.

Cheers Andrew
