South East Queensland Creek Fishing
« on: November 05, 2012, 12:37:27 PM »
Hello,

Can anyone suggest some creeks around south east Queensland (within 1 to 1.5hrs drive of Brisbane), that would have the potential for land based fly fishing? I am willing to chase anything that could be caught on a fly.

So far I have tried the Brisbane river twice (it is a big stretch of water for landbased fishing), a couple creeks that come off the Brisbane river, Pine river twice near Petrie, Armstrong creek at Dayboro, and the Calboolture River, with no successful.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers
Luke

A part of the brember river , just up stream from wulkarka train bridge , lagoon area over looking the water from a couple of metres a platform of rocks , would be good vantage point , ive seen so many fish feeding on the top there , fly with bright red fethers i would say.

Luke

Try the Nth Pine River, downstream from Youngs Crossing Rd.  Easy access, although there are quite a few catfish between Bass.

Thanks Joey, sounds like the Bremer might be worth a look.

Hi Norm, I have actually had a couple goes at the Nth Pine river near youngs crossings, but was unsuccessful. I saw plenty of mullet, and tried to tempt them with bread and a bread fly but no luck. I also saw a small bull shark and Tilapia (I think) but could not interest either of those. I see that you have mentioned the Brisbane Fly Fishing Club, can anyone come along?

Small green tungsten head dragonfly type nymphs are the go Luke, and yes you are more than welcome to come along.  we are a pretty casual group, no boring meeting minutes etc. Just pizza, a few beers and casting or tying flies.

Cheers
Norm

P.S. Next meeting is 15th Nov

If you want some salt action, the flats around the mouth of the Pine Rivers or Nudgee Beach are worth a try. Also consider the Caboolture river, fresh above weir and salt down near Beachmere.
There would be similar spots on the southside down Albert and Logan rivers, but am not as familiar with them.

Thanks Brad, I definitely don't mind a bit of saltwater fly fishing. I will basically chase any fish I can catch on fly.

Luke, come to a club meeting and you might even score a few secret spots.

How's that for drumming up business:)
