Title: Install front hatch cover - Ocean Kayak Scrambler 11
Post by: Nativeman on November 05, 2010, 01:56:59 PM
Hi folks

Here's my instructions on how to install the OK Rubber Hatch Cover for the moulded hatch area in the Ocean Kayak Scrambler 11.

Tools required

Marking Pen
Ruler
Hex Head screwdriver
Foam Sanding Block or file.
Drill with 1/4" Bit
Jigsaw

Time to Install

30 Minutes

It is an easy job, the Scrambler has a raised molded section in the plastic hull which forms an area to attach a rubber hatch cover to allow easy access to the hull.

I took off the bungee cord in the area allowing me clear access to the work area.

First I measured and traced a line with a marker pen approximatively 25mm inside the outer edge of the hatch section. I driiled two 1/4" holes inside the line and inserted the Jigsaw.

I carefully cut around the line and I popped the waste piece of plastic out.

I then took a foam sanding block and tidied up the edge left from the cut.

Then it was just a matter of attaching the Rubber hatch cover with the ss screw and bucket washer supplied in the brass insert located at the front of the hatch area.

Ocean Kayak molds brass inserts into the plastic of most of their kayaks when they are made at the factory. This makes attaching accessories so easy as there is no need to drill holes and struggle to gain access to the inside of the hull to attach a nut.

I had the choice of leaving the bungee cord off or re installing it. I re installed it as it still alows me to store items above the deck clamped under the bungee or if I need to store items more safely or to keep dry I can lift the hatch cover up and put items inside the hull.

I'm lovin this bassin yak, this new hatch covers certainly gives me more storage options with this kayak.

Cheers

Nice job Sel.  It'll give you plenty of storage options.  Nice job on the lawns too mate.  I'm struggling to keep up with mine lately.

Hi Sel,

Thanks for taking the time to photograph & explain your proceedure for this.  :thumbsup

The same hatch kit can be used on the OK Malibu 2XL kayak, same proceedure as above.

Thanks Sel,

fitz..

So you can get them without their hatch already installed?  Could put a good sized screw or clip down port on that spot instead!

Well thats how I started, with a blank canvas, see the first pic

I suppose so, You might be able to fit another type of hatch in there.

There's nothing wrong with this one, its solid as a rock once its pushed down into it's spot.

Cheers

Those hatches just look like they are a bit flimsy Sel, I'd much rather a screw in hatch.

I recon an 8 inch (200mm) round hatcxh would fit there ok.  :thumbsup
