Community invited to comment on new plan for Bendeela Recreation Area

The Sydney Catchment Authority (SCA) is currently seeking comment on a draft masterplan for the Bendeela Recreation Area in the Kangaroo Valley.

Acting Chief Executive of the Sydney Catchment Authority (SCA), Fiona Smith, said the draft masterplan sets out proposed changes to the popular camping destination to ensure the ongoing sustainable management of the site.

“Bendeela Recreation Area is one of the largest camping areas in the Shoalhaven region, and is popular for both day visits and overnight camping,” she said.

“The draft masterplan is a high level plan that sets out site changes and operational strategies for the sustainable management of the recreation area so the site can continue to be a safe, cost-effective and environmentally sound community asset.



“The proposed changes are aimed at maintaining the primitive nature of the site, while providing a quality camping experience for visitors , Ms Smith continued.

“They include the introduction of a full-time onsite manager, booking system and camping fees and appropriate upgrades to the facilities and river access points.”

Ms Smith said the SCA had developed the draft masterplan in consultation with the community.

“Masterplan concepts were developed following extensive consultation about the current use and management of the recreation area,” she continued.

 “These were then tested at community workshops held in Kangaroo Valley as well as with a Community Reference Group set up for the project and with Shoalhaven City Council.”

Written comments and submissions are invited and will be accepted until close of business Friday 13 June 2014. After the public exhibition period, feedback will be considered in development of the final Masterplan.
