Title: Lake questions
Post by: bjm on June 20, 2012, 06:25:11 PM
As I've only been kayaking for short period my yak  is still stock.  When i hit Wivenhoe dam for yak session i relised how bloody huge it was. So With Lake fishing is it nessecery to have a fish finder to have chance of landing a fish?

PLus Is there  such a thing of a dam thats easier to fish compared to the rest eg. maroon or moogerah dam.

Cheers brad

mmmmmmm Maroon has always been thought of as overstocked with bass and other swimmy critters but doesnt all mean they are easier to catch .. but its a great dam to learn on its not too big and the fish mainly stick to the edges for cover and food around the lillys. I tell everyone if you go to maroon throw celta's for spangled perch they are always willing and get quite large there.

The old origional line twister.... I seldom use spin gear anymore let alone baitcast rods in favor of fly... new zealand for monster rainbows or alaska for insane steelhead.....  :o

Good onya mate I'm still in my baitcaster perioud and will probably stay there for some time to come. Too much money invested to back out now. Oh back to the topic; if you want to fish the lakes in winter mate, try looking for patches of warmer water , usually fairly shallow area in bays where the sun, if there is any can cook it a little.

On Wivy if you don't have a sounder, look for the flocks of birds ( shags and pelicans) working the bait schools. The larger predators won't be too far away.

Flicking spinnerbaits and hardbodies along the edges will find you a fish or two aswell.

 :thanks

I shall those tips out tmw  :D

What size spinnerbait do you use/recommend and Why?  Atm moment i just use a 1/18 and 1/4 so i can fish as light as possible.

With Maroon dam where can you launch your kayaks from so your close to the Woody/stick section of the dam??

There is a camp site through a group near the top thats the closest i know of ... i am not sure if its a public or group function thing.

Failing that your best bet is the camp site below the skii club i suppose.... still a fair paddle but dont be fooled thinking the only fishing is in the sticks

 :thanks

I'm fairly certain its a holiday campsite but they are normally cheap as chips.

I found the last time i was at Maroon dam just in the main basin it was difficult to fish as the boats would always scream past you(some fairly close to). If they were a few  there it would be excellant  :youbeauty

Steve Wilkes (Sports Tuition) bought the camp ground on the creek at Lake Maroon.

I saw some earth works happening last time there & bumped into Steve on the lake, he was having it leveled for more camp sites close to the water.

Email him Here>>> (stay@camplakefire.com.au?subject=Enquiry from sweetwaterfishing.com.au)

Cheers,

Father (reyke1938) is out at Steve's on a fishing comp this weekend, he should be able to give you some feedback / info when he gets back.
I have not been on any of Steve's events since he moved away from Hinze dam, but they were always worth going along to, good social atmosphere, get taught the basics, have a good time.

Also a good place to get rid of the kids for a few days in school holidays, he does kids events!

Lots and lots of sub 30 bass there but they go very hard for their size, About one in 30 bass over legal size. We found best spots in 23 feet of water on edges of weed banks between camp pointro and where the water skiers launch. Just take your earplugs. They get around in their boats with loud speakers set at maximum volume announcing " look at me I am a w@nker"
This was the most reliable area over the weekend with only one spot amongst the trees producing fish.
Best bass for the weekend went 43cm and 2 others above 40.
 Best tandan 54cm
 best spangled 22cm
Only one yella recorded/
We we in a group of aprox 40 that stayed at camp lakefire and recommend it.
Nice and quiet family oriented place.
 Cheers
Ray

Hi Toddy, This is Camp Lake Fire. Man I really enjoyed the early morning launch for surface fish. Down there you are a quick paddle in the dark to some great lilly pads with Beaut bass under them (in season). As soon as you can see where you are throwing its on!

Just had a look at the website and it sounds like an amazing campsite.  Would be keen to know how well  the bass bite in the winter.   Though i mite brave the cold and go down there for w/e trip and find out. I will need to get some Celta's first though  ;D

I was sleeping in a cabin and the freakin' thing hit the fly wire screen beside my head like a banshee.  My laundry needed an extra spray of Preen that week.
