Title: Chasing a New Kayak

Hey Guys, I'm looking at getting a small (3m) kayak to drop into harder to get at sections of river etc. I have been looking at a Viking Nemo has anyone had any experience with these or any other similar basic sit on kayaks? Also wondering if anyone knows any good dealers around Darling Downs and SE QLD

G'day Ross.
My wife paddles a Viking Nemo. Great yaks. Roomy cockpit (for a 3 metre), really stable, light weight and tough as nails. I take it out occasionally when chasing bass and need to do a bit of bush bashing. Can customise quite easy too. Great value for money.
Not sure about dealers in your area. Got our Nemo from the Viking shop at Chermside in Brissie northern suburbs.

What is your budget Ross?

For dropping into hard to get to water the Pack Angler is brilliant. These are a light weight single person canoe.

In kayaks in skinny water I've switched over to sit in kayaks over the sit on tops. Am currently running a Camden 120 (12 footer) , these come in a 10 foot version as well. 
Sit ins tend to have better storage, run through shaller water better than SOTs, lower profile for getting in under trees & less effected by wind, shade on your legs, tend to be more efficient to paddle because no need to flare the hull to off set the higher centre of gravity & tend to be lighter for same size boat than SOTs.

Best dealer I've seen on the Downs is Mullet Gut Marine @ Toowoomba.

Thanks for the advice guys, I hadn't really looked in sit in variety but I will give them a look now

I'm looking at spending around the $700 - $1000 mark so nothing to flash

Heron 9 Angler for 799
Vapor 10 for a bit more...

One vote for the vapor 10, very happy with mine, good in skinny water & takes all the knocks I dish out to it.

I'm super happy with it. Done a few overnight trips and heap of day trips and can't really fault it.
I played with the seat and made the backrest higher but that is a personal preference, for the $$ i think you could do worse.

The Riot Quest10 HV is good, but it's tracking is shite. As soon as you stop paddling all it wants to do is turn.

Spend a little more and go for a Camden100 , or a Wilderness Systems Pungo ( they come in the 100 size too apparently ).

Old Town Dirigos aren't bad either, but the seat in the Camden pisses rings around it.

Wilderness Systems have just released a new sit in, Its called a Aspire. It comes in two sizes, 3 m and 3.3 m. It looks like a great little kayak, it would need some flush mounts added. The seating in it is superb, a sealed rear storage area, a practical dash area for a water bottle and accessories. Best bit it has a retractable skeg to give you straight line tracking when you need it, and it has the usual brilliant finish and design that comes with all Wilderness Systems Kayaks.  They are available in Mango and Red and the price tag is $999, Available now at WS stockists.. I know Adventure Outlet on the Goldy have been taking orders for them.

I spent 12 hours in the Dirigo the other day, must say I am really liking it. Seat seemed comfy enough, certainly didn't have a sore bum.

The Aspire looks good Sel, just don't know how the retractable rudder will stand up to the abuse I know I'm going to give it. I know the seat will be comfy though.

I went the other way, sold my sit in and brought a sit on Nemo.
Whilst the SI was nice, light and manuverable, it was a pain when getting in and out for portage on steep bank snags.
The Nemo is a good yak, heavier than most SI's, but Ive jigged mine up with small battery, sounder, additional rod holders etc that add up

Mate its a skeg, for only when you are out of the tight stuff, like when you are paddling home. Remember they have a lifetime warranty......really regretting selling that Loon of yours to Basser a while back... I can see merits of how the Sit In would be better for areas where you need to drag in with gear and rods...less breakages and lost gear...I know it I lost that net remember...

I went for a drive to Brisbane and the sunshine coast over the weekend had a look at a few more from various brands, I ended up going with a Viking had a try of them in a test pool wasn't to bad and the sales guy did a pretty good price on it.

Gave it a good run yesterday afternoon and did a couple of km's in a local creek and was quite happy with it now just to try it out on some cod!!!!
