Title: All in One Combination Pliers?
Post by: Bracey on April 20, 2012, 06:59:43 PM
G'day Folks,

I'm wanting to purchase a new set of pliers that can release fish by removing the treble hooks easily, be able to cut braid and also be able to change splits.

At the moment I have been using a pair of Rapala pliers, however I wanted to know what else is on the market and what everyone else is using please.

I'm wanting to sheath the pliers to wear on a belt as becoming frequently frustrated in trying to find them when needed whether I'm in the boat, yak or walking the banks.

Looking forward to reading the reply's!

Cheers Dave

Hi Dave,
This is a common problem for all of us and one that is yet to be solved satisfactorily. What usually happens is that the pliers part is too lightweight to get ito a really well planted hook and the braid cutting section is usually too far back in the jaws to get right down to cut the tag end off neatly. At the moment I'm wearing a set of Dr. Slick pliers on my belt and have a Berkely braid scissors on a lanyard tucked into either a shirt pocket or my trousers. I've spent an unbelievable amount of time and money looking for the ideal thing and so far this is my best solution. I also have two pars of pliers, large and small in the boat where I can get to them easily as well as any number of scissors. You can in a pinch use the Split ring pliers to remove a hook, but it's no good if the hook is hard to get at.
I doubt that this the answer you wanted but sorry mate, it's all I've got.
Cheers
John

Thanks for the reply John, I bought a sheath today that will hold my pliers and a pair of braid clippers. I managed to find a diving belt down the shed along with a First-Aid bumbag will will come in handy while walking the banks.

It'll be better than rumaging around the bottom of the boat or in the back pack when needed. :youbeauty

Thanks Dave

About five years ago I bought a pair of Rapala Pliers and braid scissors in a neat little pouch, still going strong and the pouch has a clip for either your belt or in my case the boat storage pocket.

Dave, that shed of yours continues to reveal all sorts of treasures. I'm big on adaptation; that is if nobody makes what you need, adapt something to fit. Sqizzy, that sounds good mate and welcome to the site. The fact is that even the best braid scissors/pliers find their way over the side of the boat.

Thanks for everyones input, much appreciated. Steve I saw them online yesterday, thanks for sharing the link. I went to the local tackle store and they don't have 'em in stock yet, but when they do, I'll be sure to grab one.

Thanks Dave

Dave I carry a Swiss Army Knife with scissors and keep them honed with a stone.  Don't have any trouble with braid, high quality steel I guess.

There worth big dollars so it goes in a belt pouch when I am in the Kayak.

Haha, like the last tool you use Dale.  :youbeauty
