Title: Another baitcaster
Post by: bushwacker on June 26, 2012, 05:52:04 PM
I kind of snapped my baitcast rod in 2 on a recent trip, So i orderd 2 gladiators and WAS just going to keep one as a spare.....

What would anyone reccomend for another not cheap but not excy baitcast reel ?

I have the Patriarch XT but not convinced i would buy another. Someone tells me some of the shimano's have moved production and are not what they used to be. Anyone heard of the Banax Syren ?

Steve

Hey Bushy,
Syren's are a nice reel, small and light with enough drag pressure for bigger fish. Have a look at the Quantum Smoke too. They have about 6kg of drag and are smooth as silk. I bought one of the 100size with a smaller spool capacity for Bass, but they'll handle much bigger fish. The Curado is now made in Malaysia, but the Chronarch is still Japanese and roughly the same price as the old Curado used to be sub $300. If you get one of the old E200 Curado's you will have a great reel. Actually the Citica is pretty good too but under $200 and still has an alloy frame.
How's that for staying on topic?

+1 for the Quantum Smoke see the review below, I know the 150 model can be had for $220 in the US and $250 in Oz (finally we are becoming competitive).  I have a couple of the Curado 200E5 for impoundment barra fishing and they have been great, but the newer G series isn’t as good.  The Pflueger Patriarch (not the XT model) has been a great bass reel for $200 dollars, takes a little while to get the dual cast controls worked out, but once done cast like a rocket

That’s my 2 cents worth

Yeh nice reel mate, I got one of the E200's although the 50 has a pretty good drag, I think it's still 5kg same as the 200. You'll pull a Dumaresq Cod with that. What are you spooling it with?

I got the 100 model Smoke from a Bass Pro Shop over there for $199. Great reel, I put it on a little 5ft 6in Samaki 1-3kg.

What did they sting you for shipping Tackrat? I am looking for a light baitcaster to put on a Phleuger Supreme 2-4 Kg. Dropped in to Charltons yesterday & Tri tried to talk me into a Daiwa T3, very nice reel, but at nearly $500 a bit out of my price range.

Cheers Andrew

I got Pam a T3 for Christmas and it is a sweet reel.  The ballistic is a couple hundred cheaper and is also very nice.  The T3Air is due out soon and I have my name on one from the first batch.  It's a step up from the T3.  The new Steez will be here soon too.

No shipping on the Smoke Andrew, I was over there. Unfortunately the shipping can be very expensive on some of thes OS purchases. Often they will charge you a percentage of the purchase price. But have a look at Tackle Wharehouse in California. I've bought a bit of gear from them and the shipping can be down to $12, but there's no comeback if it gets lost. BEar in mind that a Smoke costs around 250 in Aust so you may be better off having a deal with your tackle shop. That is unless you know someone who's going over to the States.
Cheers mate,
John

I just recently bought the T3 ballistic in a lefty, it casts very well. But I hate the retrieve.....it feels strange. I am almost at the point of putting it up for sale and trying something else. Currently I use a Alphas type R and a Chronarch , and much prefer either of them to the T3. Btw, the T3 is only a month old and has 15lb finns spooled on it , will consider offers over $260 :)

Cheers,
Dave.
