Lowrance HDS Screen Shots
« on: October 12, 2010, 06:13:51 AM »
Thought I would start a dedicated Lowrance HDS screen shots thread again - these are from  Jason Wilhelm at Lake Awonga - will add some of my own once I master it  ;)

I Proudly support the following companies: Shimano, G.Loomis, The Haines Group, Scientific Anglers, Abel Reels, Lowrance

Thanks for the pics Scott,

Had 50-60 fish like that last week on the Lowrance HDS 5x, smaller screen, hence less detail  It’s like playing a video game, cast to the left, nope have moved to the right, next cast to the right, twitch twitch pause boof.

Scott (Anybody),

Great pics, I've been looking to update to Lowrance side scan/down but am still having trouble getting my head around interpreting what is being shown

If we use these pics of Jas's, how do you tell how deep and how wide the Barra are from the boat.  The Barra are obviously clearly visible in the side scan screen but how do you interpret their depth from this screen.  Do you need to pic the arch in the 2D screen to read their depth or do you need to see them in the downscan screen to get their depth ??  Similarly if you are only viewing the sidescan screen how do you intepret how wide they are, I've looked at similar pics on the BBC boards and they speak of reading the "shadow" of the fish but is their a simpler way ??

I can see the bottom depth in the side scan screen in Jas's shots as 7-10ft & this is confirmed in the 2d screen around 7-10ft but have no idea how deep or wide the fish are.  Guess I need a basic class in side scan imaging to understand but any help you guys can give will help, thanks

PJ

There's a downloadable pdf at this link showing how the depth is shown on side imaging

Fitz,

Thanks for that, the .pdf explains the depth to bottom (although I always thought "A" was the vertical depth not on the angle ??) and also helps explain the distance out to the side for something that is on the bottom ie the ship, but doesn't really help me read how deep a suspended fish is or how wide it is eg if we use the last image  of Jasons, how deep are the two fish on the bottom right of the screen or is this one fish and its shadow ??  Probably more of an issue when you're in 40ft of water trying to read  depth of suspended Bass but I'm still struggling understanding what I see

Peter
