Title: Minn Kota 74 lb Servicing/Repair
Post by: maverick76 on October 10, 2010, 06:24:58 PM
Hi folks,

I was lucky enough to snag this motor for under $100 on ebay, it has some damage to the control unit cowling not seen in photo however the motor still works.  Just wondering on the best place to take her for repair and a little cosmetic surgery.  I have found the cowling on an USA website for around $15 a peice top and bottom but would prefer to obtain locally if possible.  Any assistance would be appreciated, its my first leccy so not sure where to go.

Regards
Colin

Call BLA 1300 252 725 ask for service department.
Qld service is at 45 Aquarium Ave. Hemmant.

They'll be able to get anything you need.

Awesome!! :youbeauty

Cheers Fitz, that was too easy!!  Pulled the motor apart this morning and cross referenced against an exploded view and it turns out 25 bucks and she'll be sweet!!!  (Bottom control box cover)  Thanks to BLA and Northside Marine for their assistance.  Does anyone have any advice on best practice for battery setup for these motors.....ie. Battery size, fuses, switches or the like.  Thanks again!!!

Regards
Colin

Hi Colin,

That was a good pick up. :thumbsup
I visited an auto electrician & got the bits I needed to sort out my wiring. Two Anderson plugs,a 40 Amp inline automatic resettable fuse & some heavy gauge electrical wire. I made up a loom to attach to the battery with the fuse a short distance from the positive pole ending with an Anderson plug & fitted an Anderson plug to the motor wires. Looks nice & neat & will protect your motor for about $50.

Cheers Andrewe

Funnily enough,, when I did Maritime College Engineering, we were taught that circuit breakers work best on the negative side of a circuit.

 :thanks everybody!!

I think given this motor only cost me $100 including new parts I might let the experts fit the batteries and wire her up!!  Geez a man should learn to loosen his purse strings a little hahahaha!!!  Must have been destiny though I lost it at the first Auction to a $110.00 bid and won it second time round for $75 after the original winner turned her down :thumb.  Must be my shout for free rides on NPD when it all calms down a little.  Thanks again folks it's truly appreciated.

Regards
Colin

Not totally sure, but that's definately what they advise. I questioned it at the time & was again told that circuit breakers & fuses should go onto the negative side of a battery circuit.
