Title: Lake Monduran
Post by: ricko on June 20, 2012, 10:39:44 AM
Hi Guys,
I am heading up to lake monduran on the weekend for a week to try and catch a barra. I havent been there before or fished for barra before either. I was hoping someone might have a few tips for me on where to go and what to use. I plan on calling into Foxies barra shop on the way and hopefully getting some advice as well. Any advice would be great as i know its not excatly the best time of year either.

It's not nick named Lake Misery for nothing!
I would postpone your trip till the water temperatures start to rise, anything above 25c is good!

Good Luck!

Cheers

Don't be discourage by the cooler weather, targetting windard shallow weed beds where water currents push warmer water, especially at days end  can be fruitful. Be very stealthy and keep a positive attitude keeping a mind set of catching fish at all times.

Go back through older and more recent threads on sweetwater to collate some golden information. Unfortunately since the floods of summer 2011, impoundment Barra talk on many forums has declined dramatically. Best bet is to look for Pete4 and BR65's threads recently as these dynamic duo's are notorius for catching good Barra within Monduran's reaches. Lately they have been targetting Barra right up in the upper reaches of the lake.

Best part about Monduran in winter is the majestic beauty it exudes with it's colourful surroundings. Fishing Monduran in winter can also produce large Barra if targetted correctly in deeper water.

Here's an article I wrote a little while ago that maybe of some assistance.

Best of luck!

Your best sourse of info is the locals. Have a look at the fishing reports on Foxies barra havoc website and the fishing reports on Lake Monduran site ( Think its called Lakem)
You are doing the correct thing dropping into Foxies on the way/
The lakem site tends to be a bit optimistic but Foxie is usually right on the ball.

Thanks very much guys for your advice. Hopefully i will manage to get catch one. As long as the weather stays good and the beer is cold catching a fish is a bonus. Anyway i will let you know how i go.

Cheers,
Ricko

Thanks for your kind words Bracey (didn't know you were a fan!).

Unfortunately my Monduran reports are mostly on another forum .  Nevertheless your helpful hints are spot on.  The only thing that I would add is that the fish spook a lot easier in the cooler months so stealth becomes much more important.

Most of our Monduran fish in the last year have come from area D and above using smaller presentations.  Rapala SXR Xrap10s rigged to suspend have been my goto lures in recent times...

Cheers

Pete

Oh, and slow down your retrieves in the cooler months.  Impoundment barra are notoriously lazy in Winter!

Haha...always a fan Pete. Haven't seen a report in a while. Kyle must be in the horrors, twitchy casting arms and all.

Let us know when ya heading up there next.  :youbeauty
