Brisbane River expedition
« on: October 26, 2011, 01:21:31 AM »
A group of 8 of us did a 50km over night run from Fernvale to Kholo on the Brisbane River last weekend.

We paddled a combination of canoes and kayaks. Andrew christened his new Vapor 106 Angler.

We camped over night on private property, permission was of course obtained before hand. Making good time coming downstream from Fernvale we rolled into camp around 3:30pm which gave us plenty of time to set up camp. A vehicle & trailer we left at the property before hand so all our tucker & camping gear didn't have to be carried down river.
Was an good evening watching the sun set over the river; a cool beverage was almost madatory.

This is the first time I've gone downstream from Burton's Bridge since the flooding in January and the first for a few years, what an eye openner. The damage done by the big wet was obvious. But just as obvious was some of the trees which had held in there and are now well and truly recovering. Some of the structure in this river is fantastic, very fishy looking indeed.

Everyone that fished caught bass, the biggest landed was 43cm which was the best fish for 3 of the group. Andrew got smoked by something more serious on a spinnerbait....he wasn't happy.  ;D
Fish were caught on a combination of spinnerbaits cast at structure and hard body lures trolled up the middle of the longer holes. Only a couple powertails and no golden perch were caught strangely.

Being picked up at Kholo Bridge on sunday afternoon saw a few sore arms but nobody complained.

All in all, everyone had a great time.

I will post some pics later in the week when I get back home from a work trip & can download.

Cheers,

Fitzy..

Thanks for the invite Fitzy, had a ball. The new kayak went very well & I can't wait to explore some new country with it on my travels. I will post some photos tonight.

Cheers Andrew

A few more photos, the last one is the result of an encounter with a stump on the first set of rapids on day one.

Cheers Andrew
