I read in today's Sunshine Coast Daily SAT.14TH January that Borumba Dam closed temporarily as of yesterday due to a blue green algal out break. Quote "Yesterday might have been considered Black Friday indeed with the temporary closure of Borumba Dam to swimming and waterskiing,because of the presence of blue green algae (cyanobacteria). A spokesman for SEQwater said the blue-green algae level was at "red" and once it was out of red,the dam would be reopened. The level is being monitiored every couple of days. The temporary closure of the dam is a precautionary measure in the interest of public safety. He said blue-green algae was not something that could be treated because it naturally occured and dissipated according to weather conditions.". I note there was no mention of restriction on people fishing in the dam and wondered does anyoneknow any different. Without the skiers about might be a good time to get in there with the kayak ? Lake Borumba temporarily close to swimming and waterskiing (Thursday, 12 January)
As a precautionary measure and in the interest of public safety, Lake Broumba has been temporarily closed to primary contact recreation (swimming and waterskiing) as of Friday, 13 January 2012 due to the presence of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria).
Signage will be erected on site advising of the temporary closure of the lake to primary contact recreation.
Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are naturally occurring organisms and are amongst the earliest known life forms on this planet. Blue-green algae make beneficial contributions to the environment through such avenues as food, fertilisers, waste processors and solar energy conversion. Despite their beneficial functions in the environment, cyanobacteria can also be a source of considerable nuisance. Blooms of cyanobacteria in lakes can pose significant risks to human health and lifestyle through the production of toxins and odorous compounds.
Seqwater will be performing water quality testing at Lake Borumba, and the lake will be reopened to primary contact recreation as soon as possible.

Hmmm, no skiers while the bloom is there......
I wonder if super phosphate would prolong the bloom ::)
