Seqwater Flood Operations Centre Update - Wivenhoe Dam releases continue

Due to last week’s rainfall the Seqwater Flood Operations Centre mobilised at 2.00am on Monday 5 March.

The Flood Operations Centre is liaising with the Bureau of Meteorology and relevant councils have been contacted.

Somerset and Wivenhoe dams

Somerset Dam is currently at 100.9% capacity and steady. Controlled releases from Somerset Dam have ceased, and operational releases will be undertaken as required.

Controlled gate releases from Wivenhoe Dam are expected to continue until late Wednesday 14 March.

Savages Crossing and Twin Bridges are expected to remain closed until the morning of Thursday, 15 March.

Colleges Crossing will remain open unless there is further rain.

Residents should always contact their local council for detailed information on local impacts.

Please note, all road and crossing closures are discussed in advance with local councils and, where relevant, the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Seqwater and the SEQ Water Grid Manager work closely with these organisations in order to notify residents downstream about impending dam releases.

Seqwater's Flood Operations Centre provides local councils with regular and detailed information about dam releases, so that councils can inform residents about possible road closures and the expected duration of those closures.

Leslie Harrison Dam

Leslie Harrison Dam is currently at 99.8% capacity and steady, with no gate releases currently being made.

Water Grid Update - 16.03.12

MEDIA RELEASE - 16 MARCH 2012: Issued at 1:15pm

Seqwater Flood Operations Centre demobilised

Due to heavy rainfall, the Seqwater Flood Operations Centre was mobilised on Monday 5 March.

Releases have concluded and the Flood Operations Centre was demobilised at 6.00pm Thursday 15 March.

As part of its normal operations, Seqwater monitors dam levels and rainfall across South East Queensland.

Gold Creek Dam water quality research

A research project to further develop water quality modelling tools will be conducted by Seqwater at Gold Creek Dam, starting Monday 19 March.

Community members who visit Gold Creek Dam regularly may notice Seqwater, University of Queensland and Griffith University scientists working on and around the dam.

The research project will examine how increased levels of nutrients are processed in a reservoir. This will assist in the development of additional water quality modelling tools which can be applied to other Seqwater dams.

The project will not impact surrounding habitat or native wildlife

Lake Baroon will be re-opened to all water based recreation activities from 6am, Saturday 17 March.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service advises that the Great Walk from Kondalilla to Lake Baroon is temporarily closed.

Recreation areas update

Lake Somerset

In the interest of public safety, Lake Somerset was closed to all water-based recreation at 6pm, Sunday 18 March. This is a result of rainfall received in the catchment over the past few days and the current water level of the lake.

Signage will be erected on site advising of the temporary closure of the lake.

Seqwater will advise when it is safe to re-open the lake.

Lake Baroon

Lake Baroon is temporarily closed to all on-water recreation activities due to the high water level.

This closure may continue for several days, depending upon the weather conditions and the amount of rainfall within the catchment area. Signs have been placed on site advising of the temporary closure of the lake. Seqwater will advise when the lake is re-opened to water-based activities.

Although Lake Baroon is temporarily closed to on-water recreation activities, the recreation areas, including the Spillway recreation area remain open to the public.

If you are thinking of visiting one of the Water Grid’s dams or recreation areas - remember to check www.seqwater.com.au for the latest public notices and recreation area closures, and ensure you check road conditions with councils and the Department of Transport and Main Roads before travelling.
