Further boating changes proposed for Blue Rock Lake
6/3/2015  -    Southern Rural Water

Southern Rural Water is inviting further submissions from the community after adjusting its proposed changes to boating at Blue Rock Lake.

Manager Water Supply East, Terry Clapham, said community submissions are welcome by 5pm on 4 April 2015.

Southern Rural Water has refined its proposed changes to boating rules that went out for public comment earlier this year.

“The refinements include removing the limit on boat size, but introducing speed restrictions in designated five knot safety zones. Water skiing and personal water craft remain prohibited,” Terry said.

“We first proposed changes to boat rules to reflect modern water craft and to encourage more recreational use of the lake.

“After considering the first round of submissions, and to implement the government’s election commitment under its Target One Million plan to encourage more recreational fishing by removing boating restrictions, we have now refined our proposal.”

Terry said Blue Rock Lake is recognised as one of the state’s best Australian Bass fisheries.

“We are really keen to see Blue Rock Lake being accessed for fishing as it is a very attractive and family friendly place to visit, especially if you can catch a fish.

“It has a surface area of around 900 hectares and with two boat ramps with ample parking, Blue Rock Lake makes an ideal spot to spend a day fishing from a boat.”

Terry said the safety zones have been introduced to address concerns around the heavily treed areas at the north end of the lake.

“A five knot limit is also currently in place 50 metres from shore for the entire lake,” he said. “This is not proposed to be changed as it is an important zone for kayak users to safely navigate the lake.

“We invite anyone who wants to comment on the proposed changes to send us a submission by 4 April. People can either email to srw@srw.com.au, or mail to Southern Rural Water, PO Box 153, Maffra, 3860.

Copies of the proposed changes are available from the Southern Rural Water website, or over the counter at the Maffra office.
