Huge Lake, Amazing Scenery but not stocked.
« on: June 15, 2013, 05:44:06 PM »
Did the tourist look around this lake today. Amazing to see it. I asked the lady at the van park if the lake is stocked. She said they tried stocking it with barra but it failed as the barra need to get to the salt water to breed. I hope she did not notice the look of bewilderment on my face as I was wondering when they let the fish out of Awoonga and Monduran and then let them back in after their breeding..sheesh.
Anyone know the reason? not enough food for the barra? Or just no one really interested perhaps?

A lake the size of the Ord, would cost a shite load to stock. Going by qld standards where stocking density is 'sort of ' calculated by surface area.... The mind boggles on the sorts of numbers required to get a fishery up and maintained.

Dick , one of the mods on this site would be able to enlighten us more...it's his backyard.

Cheers,
Dave.

There's been talk of stocking the Ord for years but it never got going, probably because of the sheer size of it. It's full of catfish apparently and they get rounded up by the pro's and get sold in Perth as Silver Cobbler. At least that's what I've been told.

The entire eastern Kimberley region is awesome. I regret that I left it this long to get there..but will definitely be back. The place is breathtaking.

If you have a kayak, get out there with a small lure and catch an archer fish, it's not hard to do. Strip it out as bait and put a nice big hook on. Go over to the platform where they feed the catfish or just hang around the bays. Shouldn't take too long till you have a metre long silver monster on the line. Not too bad eating for a freshwater fish or let them go. Grest fun to catch.
Lake is way too big for stocking considering they can get out the overflow channel during the flood.
There are stacks of longtom and archerfish in there. Really, like a fish every few minutes huge numbers of them.
Not sure what else you could stock in there.

Archers ? Really ??

It's been a few years but I'm pretty sure we were catching them there. Definately longtom.
No pics though so it may not have happened.
