End of Season Richmond Bass
« on: May 16, 2011, 11:12:50 AM »
Had long ago spotted a reach of the Richmond River on a satelite image that looked like time machine country and worth a kayak. With bass season almost run out and annual switch to rustwater fishing focus (estuary) coming, son Jules and I thought we'd give it a go, though much discussion was had concerning possibility that fish may have already head for the briny and maybe we wouldn't catch any big bass but the possibility of cod being in this area gave us something to still look forward to. Didn't get on the water until 2pm and had 6 km to go before the take out point which we achived by 5.15pm courtesy of good current speed. Fishing was great - hadn't gone 50m from where we started when Jules hit a fish that towed the yak straight into the snags - I called it for a cod due to its low end torque but back paddling got it clear and after few more strong rund up come a 47cm bass (Jules new PB), next cast he hooked up again this time a 43 cm fish (my best for the season is a 39 cm fish  :-[) - we then did a few bends with no fish (and I was copping lip ::)) - then I started getting runs on the board - up until the score was 9 (me) : Jules (2)  :thumbsup - then he caught his third and final fish - 12 all up great day, all were in excellent pre spawning condition.  The only downside was the 4K walk back to the car in the the cold (originally we were meant to have a mate and extra vehicle with us - but he pulled out at the last minute)- couldn't belive 12 cars went past and none pulled over to offer a lift or check if we were OK etc. ???, would never happen where I live, especially if you saw a child with an adult...ce la vie, the Australia of today is not the one I knew as a kid...still we enjoyed the moonlight walk spinning yarns and Jules got piggy backed 3.5 of the 4 Ks anyway :P

That would be handy Jim, I got the sooty in the Granite Creek that runs through Mareeba aand fished the Walsh on the Mareeba side of Dimbula. I'll shoot off a PM mate.
