First confirmed euro's in the middle Brisbane I was gutted when they floated. Big one is a female full of eggs another just mature female and a mature male loaded ready to go.  :thumbdown

I heard reports of them probably 15 years ago. After the floods of 99/2000 I killed several that were trapped in small pools as the  flood waters receeded. Have shot some video of a few at Lowood in the past 12 months.

Have been in the Mid Brisbane for years, but haven't seemed to have over populated for some reason.

Good info tho Steve, bad that's the info reinforces the presence of the carp.

Told QDPI & there was a national database kicking around some years back, told them as well.

Most likely went in the anecdotal evidence or wild goldfish file.

Saw that when Wes posted it.
Can you send the video of the Lockyer Ck. ones to Dani or Dan at DAFF. All reports thus far have been unconfirmed or wild goldfish you can ID euros. Most likely have come upstream in the floods.

not good! They are next to impossible to eradicate as most of us know so disappointing they have a foot hold in QLD. Have a "Catch a carp day" and see how many you wipe out. They were in decline for a long time in Vic and I suspect the droughts were to blame. They love the flooded backwaters for breeding I assume. Last Cod Classic (Lake Mulwala, NSW/Vic border), a staggering 4700 carp were presented for measuring whereas the 2011 tally was 2700 and 2010 only 378 (source: http://www.codclassic.com.au/html/facts_and_figures.html)
This points to a combination of population expansion (we'e had a lot more rain) and an increase in anglers specifically targeting them but either way, it is a heck of a lot of fish and worrying...

So, if you'd like to catch one: (note that this is my personal experience and open to other ideas)

The bite they can be very finicky or slam baits. I've had rods pulled into the water by sub 1kg carp on a few occasions and struggled to hook them on others. Either way, always secure your rod. A bite indicator, such as an empty stubby** is ideal - no idea where to get these though  :)

sweet corn! They prefer name brand stuff to generic store brands - more flavour maybe. As many as you can squeeze on a hook. Bait holder hooks are best and about size 4 to 6 but a few sizes ether way is fine depending on the size of fish. Spread a bit of corn around the area first to get them in the mood then flick out an unweighted hook or lightly weighted running sinker rig. You can use a float in shallower water. Sometimes they can be VERY fussy other times you can pole them in.

white bread. remove crusts and squash the bread over the hook - easy. Fresher the better as the older stuff flakes and drops off the hook easier. This hangs on ever nunder water for long periods. Preservatives at work? :)

worms and or shrimp yep, hedge your bets for a more desirable species.

lures - unusual but possible. I've caught them trolling for trout in Vic. These were small, and obviously reasonably quick fish as we were doing about 4 km/h using small Rapala CD5s. Have also hear dof people catching them on big stumpjumpers and spinnerbaits when fishing for cod in the Murray.

Flies - stacks of fun! You can somtimes find carp swimming in shallow backwaters with their backs exposed. This is when they are prime fly targets. 4-9wt setups (with the heavier gear you just have more chance of spooking them) are all fine. They have reasonably poor eyesight so you need to either drop the fly within 30cm or cast ahead and move the fly when they are right on it. Big nymphs are great as are small minnow imitations. They will also take a dry fly but if they have their heads down grazing, you need to fish wets. Anything taking stuff off the top in warm water - e.g. the Murray is often a carp.

soft plastics - they'd have to take them but I've never tried. Anyone?

Remember that spear fishing is not allowed in inland waters. This includes bowfishing (shooting them with a bow and arrow or crossbow) and using spearguns. You are not allowed to use haul nets in most (if not all) states in inland waters (some states let you collect bait using 6m nets) but as far as I know, you can catch them using a landing net if they are free swimming but happy to be corrected.

where to find them? The do not like fast water a great deal. They will travel through it but prefer eddys, backwaters, lakes and slow moving rivers. The hate salt water and will try to avoid it at all costs. Often found under weirs a) feeding on stuff washed over (common on the Murray) and b) if it is in an estuary, trying to get the freshwater coming over the weir and avoid salt. They are most often on the bottom of the water column but will venture to the surface close to the edges of lakes and rivers to grab bugs from the top on occasions or graze shallow weed beds.
They are most active during warmer months but you can still catch them in winter in Vic.

Dispatch and Disposal - to kill a carp humanely, you can lift up a gill and aim a sharp to the centre of the head and towards the eye. This will kill them almost instantly but the implement must be strong - i.e. not your favourite fillet knife as the head is very thick bone (Stanley make great screwdrivers*). By law (in Vic anyway) carp must not be returned to the water dead or alive. Burial is the preferred method but they can be disposed of in bins. Obviously, leaving a pile of 30 carp beside a bathing area, boat ramp or anything like that is not good and you could be charged with littering.

good luck QLD.

Cheers, NS
