Carp sighting in the North West of Tasmania
Tasmania Inland Fisheries Service

A recent investigation into a carp sighting turned up a usual suspect, goldfish.

Last week fisheries officers investigated a carp sighting located in North Motton. Information was received by a member of the public that there may have been carp inhabiting a number of small farm dams on a property. After surveying the waters using backpack electro fishing equipment, a wild population of goldfish (Carassius auratus) was discovered. Note that these area completely different species to carp (Cyprinus carpio) It is likely that these were introduced to these waters by way of release as ornamental aquarium pets. This is a reminder that the translocation of fish species in any freshwater systems is prohibited without a permit from the Inland Fisheries Service.

In addition to this, goldfish are classed as pests and are known to compete with native fish as well as having the potential to spread fish diseases and parasites. Although this sighting was a result of miss-identification, members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious looking fish to the IFS, and if possible take photos or collect and freeze the fish as a sample. These measures are in place in order to avoid the potential introduction and spread of carp to waters other than Lake Sorell.
