Surprise, surprise!
« on: January 29, 2011, 03:57:17 PM »
Headed up Coochin Ck for a look at what habitat had been destroyed and what new habitat had been created from the floods chasing Bass with Shaun and Steve this morning. No Bass, however every story has a silver lining.

It almost looked surreal looking at the new habitat that has been carved into the creek by what would have been a raging torrent flowing down the windy creek when the flood water was at it's peak with markings on trees where debris would have hit on the way down with gouges out of the bark 18ft to 20 ft above ground level and entire trees two and a half feet round fallen across the creek after it's root system had been undermined.

With plenty more structure to flick at we hope the Bass return in numbers. Things looked promising as we all had  follows and a few hits each from what would have been the trademarks of these Bass the call Coochin home.

Cheers Dave

Give em a chance Dave, they have barely cleared dohles rocks, will take a while for them to swim up there and put their "wild bass" suites on, a few more weeks I'd reckon  ;)

Gee that perch has travelled. Probably from a farm dam inundated in the flood but it'd be shock to get one up that creek.

fitz..

I thought it may be an escapee from a farm dam that made it's way into the creek during the flood as Fitzy mentioned.

She took my lure 3ft from the kayak in about a 10ft wide section of the creek, getting a good look at her as she came to the surface for the first attempt to take the lure. I thought it was a Bass at first until she nailed the lure eventually and bringing her closer to the kayak for a closer inspection, I then realised it was a Silver. Didn't think twice and lifted her straight into the kayak after playing her for all of about 5 seconds, all excited as I hadn't caught a Silver since I was about 15 years young. Bad move though, as she was still green as an Irish Leprechaun diving straight into my crutch lodging one hook of the rear treble past the barbs into my shorts and one other into my seat while she still had the front treble still lodge firmly in her small yet tough mouth.

It was touch and go there for a minute, not for the fish but for more important parts as I managed to quickly cut the hook that was lodged in the seat and cut a hole in my shorts to remove the treble from the danger area with a pair of side cutters and after a few happy snaps she was released very healthy and unharmed.  :youbeauty

C'mon Dave, I reckon it was all of three seconds before it was hauled in bucking between your legs.  It was certainly one way to make sure the fish had no time to comprehend what was happening.  There wasn't much I could do from the front of the kayak either except laugh and offer advice on how to keep everything in it's rightful place.  It was great seeing the fish take the lure at such close quarters too.

Great adventure, even though the fishing was tough.
