Title: Combo opinions
Post by: JH on May 27, 2014, 07:35:14 PM
Hello

I am looking to set up a combo being a 1-3kg 7ft carbon rod with a 1000 series reel capable of ultra slow retrieval. Budget is about $600 -$700. I have some products in mind but wanted to see what people recommended. Any helpful input is greatly appreciated.

Oh, and I forgot to mention I want to use 6lb braid and leader and fish soft plastics (using 1/8 to 1/4 oz. jig heads).

Pflueger patriarch xtr 1-3kg, matched with a ci4 1000, well under budget too

A lox matched to a shimano sustain was recommended to me. But I read a few things about lox breaking tips a few years back and I am unsure if this has been rectified.

Nah I wouldn't touch a lox. Mate had tip snapping issues too.

What about a g loomis around the $300 mark. Are these good value.

They can be, but to be honest,  have a feel of the rods in store. Price tag doesn't always mean it's a better rod. I have a couple loomis rods and i love them, but I only bought them because they were half price. If I was going to spend  $300ish on a rod, I would start looking into custom made rods by local builders. There are a stack of great local builders who would benifit more from your business than Shimano!

My little flick setup is a Berkely Dropshot rod and a Shimano Stradic 1000. Awesome light setup, great from boat, land, yak (handle length is perfect from yak). Done me great service for last few years on everything from light as for bream to nice big bass :)

Okay. I have reached a point where I will chose between a 1 piece daiwa generation black itchy twitchy or a daiwa gen black albino.

In either case it will be paired to a shimano rarenium ci4 1000.

Does anyone have any experience with these rods. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Generation Black rods are excellent value for money.

Thanks. I just decided to go with a daiwa aird 1000 over the shimano.

Daiwa is just excellent value at the moment from what I can see.

I will use the rod to target yellow belly on soft plastics running 3 to 5 lb braid and 4 to 6 lb leader with 1/6 and 1/4 oz jig heads.

With that in mind would the itchy twitchy hold up?

I have to say, I love the way Brad names the rods in his range.  I've got the Beef Stick which is a heavy baitcaster.  You won't be disappointed with the Daiwa combo.  I've got a couple of Daiwas and they go the distance.
