Title: First barra at Monduran
Post by: Bolshy on November 02, 2013, 05:17:24 AM
Last week, me and six mates hired the houseboat at Monduran dam for a weeks barra fishing. To say the fishing was a bit slow would be an understatement as we caught two (both were 70 cm) between the lot of us! I was lucky enough to get one of them, breaking my barra cherry (dodgy photo attached). We tried a range of lures like suspending twitchbaits, gold bombers, hollow frogs, blades, poppers, trolled deep divers, flies, spinnerbaits etc etc.

There was the Monduran fishing comp on the weekend before we came, so maybe the fish were gunshy? Too early in the season? Winds too variable (although we had 3-4 days of northerlies)?

We had arranged for a charter guide to learn some local tips but his boat was getting fixed and we ended up missing out. Rob the guide and caravan park owner was good enough to point us towards a nice little spot that yielded one of the barra. The houseboat was a great way to get around, putting you right on the money for the dawn and dusk sessions. Thanks Monduran, we'll be back...

Congrats on your first! Did it put on an aerial display? Getting them to hit a plastic frog at speed is absolutely insane, I'm going up to Mackay just after xmas to fish Teemburra and Kitchant dams. Thanks for the report.

Cheers, Mick.
