awoonga dam
« on: August 12, 2011, 09:58:26 AM »
Hi all. I am heading upto awoonga mid september, and was just wondering how the dam has recovered after the floods, Im heading up from newcastle nsw, and im going anyway, but just wanted some prior knowledge as to what the dam was fishing like. I saw on the tv johnny mitchell was fishing the boyne river, am i better off concentrating on the river or has the dam recovered. Any info and or tips for fishing up that way would be awesome. Ive only fished the dam on two trips in 2007 and 2008 :thanks

I wouldn’t waste my petrol money fishing at Awoonga and I only have to drive twenty minutes to get there. I’ve only seen one photo of a barra caught in the Dam since January. Spent a couple of day sounding around the dam with the structure scan and couldn’t find any.

All the locals in the know (and the guides) have all gone AWOL and are fishing elsewhere.  Heard on the grapevine that one of the universities netted a section of the dam to check for heavy metals in the fish after the recent flooding and they didn’t catch any barra, but did catch plenty of cat fish. On a positive note, have seen some good catches of red claw since the floods.

Boyne and adjacent water ways have and still continue to produce quality barra for those that put the effort in.

Regards
Earl

Well we through they were but locals say there nothing compared to earlier in the year. Plus during Easter no Barra where caught near the camping area as well. So we need to wait to the warmer months to see what happens.
