Title: lures for catching bass
Post by: bondy99 on November 09, 2012, 10:46:35 PM
Hello fellow fisho's

Can someone tell me what would be an ideal lure or plastic to catch Bass with?

The place is Wolfdene. Its freshwater one side and salt the other, but intermix when the tide is higher during full and new moon periods.

Some person catching them was using cricket for bait with a chemically sharpened 2/0 baitkeeper hook and using floats. 3 guys last week were using lures but with floats also.

I'm not savvy enough on bass but would like to catch some for a feed. I hear they are good to eat.

Are you talking Stanmore Road causeway? That is the top of the tidal run in the Albert River.

Bass are terrible to eat & they're breeders in that area so best to let them swim away.

If you want a feed around that area & hit a couple of those ponds around Beenleigh that are full of tilapia, they're great to eat.

Lures? Bass are pretty dumb. Anything around 50mm that floats, dives or bloops can catch them on any given day, but buying Aussie made lures is a preference of mine. It's where you cast & how you work a lure that matters. Your fishing won't evolve much using crickets, worms or shrimps, good to see you're giving the wood/plastic a go.  :thumb

Hello Sweetwater,

Yes that's the place, I was fishing below the causeway.

Thanks for the info on lures, will definetly give them a go.

Would you know who would have those lures that are Australian made locally?

Tilapia hey!

I'm not aware of any ponds off hand around the Beenleigh area. Any spots you reckon I could try?

Is corn or worms the ideal bait for Tilapia or a lure?

I have seen the odd creek at one place, however, traffic is a problem which I am wanting to get away from.

Big W sells Halco's and RMG's which are Australian at reasonable prices. They work well on bass as well as in the salt.

Binder,

I purchased some RMG Scorpion lures 2.5m deep dive for jewfish 3 years ago.

I have tried spinnerbaits (metal lures) for yellowbelly but had no hookups

Usually.
Whilst sinking lures are certainly a handy item to have in the tackle bag, most who hand make lures dont seem to do them, probably needs denser than normal wood and weighting to combat their natural buoyancy.
