Title: To stinger or not to stinger
Post by: Cam on April 28, 2013, 07:26:27 PM
I am interested in people's thoughts as to the stinger hook on spinner baits.  Does the stinger hook on a spinner bait remove one of it's prime advantages, particularly in really "sticky" country?  Just find that when casting tight to structure, I tend to snag more than when stinger free.  Agree that hook-up rates improve in general, but is that outweighed by the stingers outstanding ability to catch logs?

I watched the video linked on the sweetwater front page, put the air tube over the eye of the stinger, without it flopping about I found they were jusr as snag resistant as no stinger!

Depends on which way your point the stinger! I always point mine up, but I dont use them all that much either, as I tend to change skirts rather than lures (skirts are cheap as chips from the States, and reusable). That way I only carry a couple of different weight spinners, and a dozen or so skirts of different colours etc.

Hint look for Mustad saltwater hooks. Dino put me on to them years ago. I use a size 2. They have biggish eyes, no offset, make a great stinger hook for a lot less than the price of packaged "stinger hooks".

All my spinnerbaits have stingers and would not have it any other way. I also rig a plastic tail andthat decreases that chances of "catching logs"

As UBK said further up. The video below is how I run my spinnerbaits. I find no difference in snagging up, but a lot better hookup rate.

Hooks I use a Siwash saltwater fly hooks.
