Budget 2015 making Buffalo Creek boat ramp safer and more secure
17 April 2015 - Northern Territory Govt

Budget 2015 will invest $790,000 to ensure Buffalo Creek boat ramp is safer and more secure for recreational fishermen.

Minister for Parks and Wildlife Bess Price said the upgrades will include the expansion of the free parking space, CCTV and beach protection.

“Buffalo Creek is a convenient and popular spot to launch your boat and the current trailer parking space outside the secure compound is not able to cope with the number of trailers over weekends and during good tides,” Mrs Price said.

“We have listened to concerns of Amateur Fisherman’s Association Northern Territory (AFANT) and local fishermen and will be expanding the free parking area.

“We want to ensure the great Territory lifestyle is as easy and safe as possible for everyone to enjoy.

“The expansion will improve traffic flow, security and accommodate more visitors to the site. CCTV cameras will add an extra layer of security for anglers who park their car and trailer at the upgraded car park when they go out fishing.

“Territorians love getting outdoors and Buffalo Creek is right on the door steps of the northern suburbs, providing easy access to some great fishing spots.

“Buffalo Creek is popular with fishermen and bird watching enthusiasts and is a recognised site for migratory shorebirds.

“We have also listened to concerns about the protection of the migratory shorebirds and will be constructing a rock wall beside the boat ramp to stop vehicles being driven onto the beach ensuring the protection of visitors and wildlife.

“This Government understands the popularity of the Buffalo Creek area and aims to have the Casuarina Coastal Reserve projects completed by the end of the 2016 Dry Season.

“The $790,000 is part of the $10.68 million to rejuvenate and revive the Casuarina Coastal Reserve. The Reserve is the most popular park or reserve in the Territory, with around 930,000 visits a year.”

AFANT’s Executive Officer, Tristan Sloan, said the Association has long recognised the importance of the secure compound at Buffalo Creek boat ramp.

“We are really pleased with the planned upgrades to the Buffalo Creek boat ramp and facilities,” Mr Sloan said.

“Shoal Bay and the surrounding areas accessed by Buffalo Creek boat ramp are well known for the excellent recreational fishing opportunities they provide.

“AFANT is proud to support any infrastructure development allowing more anglers to take advantage of the excellent recreational fishing opportunities available in the Northern Territory.”
