NEWS
The fishing has been pretty good land based with some good fish still being caught on bait and spin methods. Fly fishing has been a little slow over the last week.
Boat trolling improved with the mornings better than evenings.
As we get towards the weekend the weather should improve and the boat fishing should be better again.

LAKE LEVEL and TEMPERATURE
The lake continues to rise and is about 84%
Water temperatures are now about 10 degrees Celsius.

Best methods to catch a trout.
Best method – Bait fishing and spinning around the lakes edges.
Best lake lure – Tasmanian Devil number Y82 has been good between 2 and 5 metres deep.
Best lake area – East Jindabyne Islands and Sids Bay is picking up.
Best fly method lake – Big black flies at night has been great.
Best River – Rivers and streams now closed until October 1st
Let’s now have a look at how to catch one in a little more detail.

Let’s have a look at what the fishing is going to be like over the next few weeks.

Trolling
The best morning this week was 8 fish in about 3 hours and all were caught trolling at 2 to 3 metres deep.
The rainbow trout have become more active hitting lures hard and then jumping  out of the water, so sharp hooks are needed to stop the fish throwing the lure on the jump.
As the lake levels now start to rise and the water warms we will see some more insect hatches and surface trolling is going to improve. Lead core lines at two colours (20 metres) to three colours are good. (20 to 30 metres of line out will get your lure down an extra 2 to 3 metres).
There is no doubt that lead core lines were catching most of the fish in the middle of the day, over the last week with the sunny weather and we even caught fish off the downrigger at 25 feet.
The best lure over the last week has been number Y82 yellow wing Tasmanian Devil preferably in Duel Depth (20 gram) The Y48 duel depth is worth a try on dull days or deeper down.
New Tassies that are going well are the numbers 107 and 102.
How exciting! After lots of prays Rapala have just released the new Aussie Spotted Dog in a CD 5 and a floating 7cm and they are catching fish as well as would be expected.
We have limited lures in stock so be quick as they may become hard to get due to demand!
Good on you Rapala. The new Rapala colour Orange Tiger is also going well in the CD5 and 7.
East Jindabyne islands, Hayshed Bay, Lion and Cub Islands and the South arm have been fishing very well.

Lake Bait Fishing
(RIVERS ARE CLOSED UNTIL THE OCTOBER LONG WEEKEND always remembers however that primarily most rivers and streams in the Snowy Mountains Region are fly and lure only, We recommend that you first check with the Department of Primary Industries (NSW Fishing rules) as to which rivers in the area you can legally bait fish in. IF IN DOUBT DON’T BAITFISH IN RIVERS!)
The best artificial baits at the moment are Rainbow Paste, Chunky Cheese, Lime twist, Sherbet and the old favorite lemon twist. Scrub worms off the bottom and a power bait dropper will be the best middle of the day for the brown trout.
Tiger worms or scrub worms under a float have been doing very well also for rainbows and Atlantic salmon.
Best areas for bait fishing at the moment have been, Waste Point area, East Jindabyne and The Snowy Arm.

Lake Spinning
Tasmanian Devils are catching fish in the deeper water by casting and waiting for the lure to sink a little before a slow retrieve.
Spin close around rocky outcrops for best results later on in the day in the day and use smaller lures like Celtas or Gillies Spinners around the shallow bays after dark. Check out the new glow in the dark Vibrax spinners you will be surprised how well they work in fringe light to dark when used around the edges of the rising lake in the shallows. Have a look also at the lures that are working for the boat trollers, they also should be good from the shoreline. When working the lake edges, don’t stay in one place too long and only put in a couple of casts in each area. Keep moving! I have been hearing very good reports of big browns talking the Mepps Aglia Streamers and the Mepps Bugs in the shallows at dawn and dusk. Also try the Gladiator Hip Baby in gold they have also been worth a try.
Blades like the Strike Pro Cyber Vibe 35and the TT Swithblade 1/8 sunset gold (any gold) are also very good at the moment.

Fly Fishing Lake
The water is rising fast and the fish are just off the dropoffs and you need to fish a little deeper. Woolley Buggers or larger flies deep down will be best.
Craigs Night time and Williamson’s Goldfish have been two flies well worth using at dawn and dusk.
If you sight a fish in the shallows you may be better to cast a smaller fly than a larger fly, something like a green nymph.

For visitors to the Snowy’s we have a full range of fishing tackle for hire at my shop and fishing tours are now available.
