Blue-green algal alert lifted for Myall Lake
The blue-green algae warning for Myall Lake has now been lifted by the Hunter Regional
Algal Coordinating Committee.
As algae numbers have been at low levels for two consecutive samplings the public warnings
can now be lifted.
Algal numbers can change dramatically with variations in weather or lake conditions, so it is
still prudent for people to avoid water where algae can be seen or if there is a strong odour.
Despite the warnings being lifted algae may be present in low numbers and can accumulate
in embayments during still conditions. This is normally most common following a warm day
and where windy conditions in a prevailing direction have occurred.
Blue-green algae usually appear as green paint-like scums on the water, near the edges, or
as greenish clumps throughout the water.
It makes the water appear dirty, green or discoloured and generally has a strong musty or
earthy odour.
The Hunter Regional Algal Coordinating Committee will continue to undertake monitoring
and further advise the public if the situation changes.
