Media release: Trout anglers face fines for using illegal baits

5 Sep 12 - Victoria Fisheries Dept

Trout bag limit Anglers are reminded that the daily bag limit for trout is five per person.

A number of Melbourne men are facing fines for using illegal baits during the opening weekend of trout season last weekend.

Fisheries Officers were out in force in the days leading up to and during the opening weekend in a targeted campaign called Operation Accelerate to ensure recreational anglers were obeying Victoria’s trout fishing regulations.

The Officers found the vast majority of anglers were obeying bag limits and licensing requirements but were disappointed that some anglers were continuing to illegally use trout ova as bait.

The anglers who were found using trout ova as bait will receive infringement notices and face fines of up to $2,000 and forfeiture of their fish and fishing equipment.

One man was also arrested and will be charged on summons with alleged obstruction offences for failing to comply with a lawful request from officers.

Last week, on the Wednesday prior to the opening of trout season, a member of the public also telephoned the 13FISH fisheries offence reporting line to alert Fisheries Officers to an angler fishing for trout out of season in the Murrindindi River between Yea and Murrindindi.

Fisheries Officers responded to the call and apprehended a 57-year-old Lalor man using and in possession of recreational fishing equipment on the seasonally closed Murrindindi River.

The man had taken and was in possession of trout during the closed season, had exceeded the bag limit and at the time he was intercepted was also using illegal trout ova as bait.

The man will be charged on summons with a number of offences.

The open season for trout in 2012-13 began at midnight on August 31 this year and runs until midnight on June 10 next year.

Fisheries Victoria Northern Victoria Regional Fisheries Officer Mike Hosking said Fisheries Officers had significant powers of inspection and seizure and would not only inspect anglers’ licences but would continue to routinely inspect anglers’ bait, ice boxes, vehicles and fish.

“This ensures that anglers are fishing sustainably and within the regulations. Where detected offenders face heavy penalties, probable seizure of fish and equipment and possible court appearances,” Mr Hosking said.

Anyone who sees illegal fishing activity is urged to call the 24 hour reporting line, 13FISH (13 3474).
