Fat Fish Hidden in the Woods

Woods Lake is the perfect brown trout water for an early season visit. It is fertile and not too deep. There are good weed beds that provide a place for trout food to thrive. Being able to use bait, lure or fly provides an opportunity for everyone. The water level has risen quickly with this winter’s rain. The freshly flooded edges will draw the fish in looking for food. This is good for the angler.

This lake was once one of those that places that only the brave and adventurous tackle.  It was a gruelling 4WD trip to catch a trout. It also suffered from varying water levels and, at times, very dirty water. But not anymore.

We’ve upgraded and maintain the track to 2WD standard. Water level agreements with Hydro Tasmania means the lake doesn’t get too low and dirty. More and more anglers are realising how good this lake is. Some are concerned at the increased fishing pressure but the lake is handling this. Woods Lake is producing a wide range of different size fish.  This shows that spawning in the Upper Lake River is maintaining stock. Fish are in good condition indicating that there is a good food supply.

The boat ramp has been improved over the past few years and this lake is popular with boating anglers. Trolling and drift spinning catches fish. Bait fishing is popular with those that camp the night in the number of sites around the lake. The fly fishing has been spectacular and this season should be no different. The lake is that good it is being considered as one of the venues for the 2019 World Fly Fishing Championships. Early season, fish should be in close. As it warms up there will be good mayfly and caddis hatches. This lake is surrounded by hills and trees. In the summer lots of insects are blown out onto the water providing exciting surface action.

Wood Lake opens on Saturday 6 of August 2016 until Sunday 30 April 2017.  You can fish with bait, artificial lures or fly.  There is a 5 fish bag limit with a minimum length of 300mm and only 2 over 500mm allowed to be kept. Find out more in our Angler Access brochures.
