Blown 3lt Diesal
« on: July 21, 2012, 04:35:30 PM »
Another Nissan 3lt turbo sob story. I was heading up the coast yesterday morning, just heading down the merging lane onto the freeway when I heard a pop in the engine & then no power. Lots of smoke & a bit of clattering in the motor, next thing the motor started over revving by itself. I switched it off & coasted to a stop. RACQ was there within half an hour & towed me too a mechanic in Bald Hills. Mechanic has said motor is most likely stuffed & I am up for Min $6500 for a replacement second hand engine or min $10000 for a recon engine with warranty. What do I do? Has anyone had any experiance with this>

Cheers Andrew

Bad luck Andrew.

I'm guessing you have a 2001-2003 Nissan Patrol. My parents own one with the 3.0L Turbo Diesel and it has been nothing but trouble. Do not rebuild that motor or put one in of the same vintage. Try and source a later model motor and sell the vehicle.

Again I am sorry to hear you have 'that' problem. Good luck.

Cheers,
Dave.

Solution / Buy anything but a 3ltr Nissan, 4.2's are great.

Sorry to hear tho when a ve hicle does something like that it always feels like a kick in the guts

Have you checked your oil?
Sounds similar to when our injectors were leaking into the crankcase.
Did it turn off when you turned the key off?

Yes, turned off fine, & oil looked good, Think I will get it towed back home so my mechanic can look at it.

Andrew

when you get it home check a few things.

I recon you have done a turbo.

The pop over rev and rattle sounds maybe ok when you said it has oil still.

So when you get home

Pull the outlet from the turbo to the aftercooler off, if it full of oil then we are on a start.

You will need to remove the after cooler / intercooler cause it will be full of oil.

What sort of RPM did the engine get to?

Anyway, remove the oil filter and cut it open. Get the pleated material in a vice and give it a squeeze. When all oil out have a look at the paper element. Any metal???

If ok then replace the filter and change oil.

You could then bypass the turbo / or remove and start to see if its ok. If you remove then put the turbo feed down the turbo drain.(or it wil get real messy.Start the sucker up, sound ok??

Wont have any power but will give you an indication.

It may be just a case of a turbo seal. Anyway, would fix cheaply if ok and then make the big decision weather to keep or flick.

There is enough turbo repairers around.

Thanks Steve, after talking to my cousin & brother in law who have both been mechanics, I had myself convinced it was just a blown turbo. Spent $320 getting it towed back to my mechanic only to find holes in the top of two pistons  :o
2nd hand motor going in this week, can't justify the extra expense of a recon engine.

Oh well, that puts a dent in my lure buying spree this weekend.

Sad story Andrew, but that motor was never a great success for Nissan. The older 4.2 was a better motor even though it tended to blow a bit of soot. You could turbo the 4.2 provided you kept the boost down to around 6lb the are still a good honest engine. The injectors have to be serviced every 100,000km , but if you look after them they literally go for ever.
Cheers,
John
