Carlton Mid Tagged Fish
« on: October 29, 2010, 07:52:06 AM »
I've just found out about a campaign that Carlton Mid are running, releasing tagged fish and offering cash prizes for catching them.  They will be releasing some in Somerset Dam on December 1st.  I would've thought that as Secretary of the Stocking Group for that impoundment, I'd have heard something direct from Carlton, but I guess they don't think we're important enough to notify.  Most people who run commercial fishing competitions on Stocked Impoundments at least acknowledge the stocking groups and the more professional organisers give a donation to the group, not so Carlton Mid.  The interesting one will be the Barra they release in Townsville on November 1st.  $10,000 prize for catching the first one.  I wonder what the fine will be if you catch it, considering they are releasing them on the first day of the closed season.  I gather there wasn't a hell of a lot of research put into this exersize.  If you want to chase the bucks, you can look at the details here:
https://secure.carltonmidrichfish.com.au/index.aspx
If you feel like I do, you could contact them, and ask them if they'd like to acknowledge the work put in by the local Stocking Group, and ask why they are promoting Barra fishing during the closed season.

I'm sure we could find room at the hatchery for a pallet or two of thier best bitter. :thanks
Dale do you know where they intend to release the Barra, dam or estuary?
If they intend on releasing that Barra at the start of the closed season into an esturine system I think that would be highly irresponsible, verging on criminal :thumbdown.

Cheers Andrew

A good waste of tag resources. Somerset was removed from the tagging location list some time back.
Totaly ignorance of the impact that this could have on the non-target fish / species in the lake. No recongition of the fish restocking group, nor offer of monetary / in kind assistance.

But the kicker is that it's all about fish getting killed all so some multi-national company can sell more booze.
I've never been overly fond of beer, now the taste of Carlton just got a bit sour....  :-\   :thumbdown

I believe that the Water Board have been in contact with the organisers of this event expressing their concerns and they are sorting through the issues.  I contacted the organisers on behalf of SWFSA Inc. but I am yet to receive a reply.  I've been told, but not checeked yet, that the Ross River is exempt from the closed season.

CUB haven't thought this one through.
They've engaged Rex Hunt to sell the concept via radio.
While this Rex resurrection falls short of a full blown comeback, the message
to get lines in the water is accompanied by a Rex rendition on lure fishing,
'specially softs. A lot has happened since he was last in our face and in our ears.
He should be remembered as the person who had more impact on Australian fishing
than anyone past, present or to come. But then, a quid's a quid.
