Garfish
« on: May 24, 2015, 07:51:15 PM »
Does anyone know whether Garfish is or are around in Wivenhoe Dam, either Logan's Inlet or Hays Inlet / Billies Landing, those latter ones one can only access if member of Sailing Club.

Shore based only.

Somerset is full of them, so it would be a fair bet Wivanhoe is as well, but starting to get late in the year (they disappear in winter), you might be lucky.

When I was involved with Brisbane Valley Anglers many years back, we translocated hundreds of Gar from Somerset to Wivenhoe for DPI project. They were there in good numbers a few years later.
Theres a bit of an art to catching them, but involves Clothes pegs, Jatz Crackers and bread/dough and noodle rods.

Thanks for the reply people.

I'm planning to go up to Wivenhoe Dam next week before my SIP expires, purchased last year and never had use for it as yet.

Hopefully the snub nose gar will be around when I'm there. Early am and very little wind would be the best I'd think.

Would fresh dough be the go or tiny cuts of shrimp?

With regards to Somerset, not familiar with that one, being landbased, is there any particular spot I could try?

Thanks

Burley up with bread, I find a tiny bit of shrimp catches more than bread does on the hooks, but bread does the job.

I would just go with bread, when ever I'm out on the dam and I have a sandwich and don't eat the crust I pick it to pieces and chuck it over the side and the gar are like mini Mackerel just appearing out of no where attacking the left overs.

As with all Seqwater impoundments, shore based angling is permitted only from authorised recreation areas. So for Somerset that means The Spit, Kirkleagh or the boat ramp on Westvale Rd up the top of the lake.

In saying that, I'd be fishing in Wivenhoe along Somerset Park camping area (below the dam wall), just stay out of the no fishing zone.

IMHO the gar fishing is generally better in Wivenhoe than Somerset.

Sweetwater,

Thanks for that info, you're probably right about the gar being more available in Wivenhoe than Somerset. Like most things, I've probably left it a bit a late to catch any.

What would be a better size and type of hook to use?

I've used size 10 hooks, still seems a bit big compared to the small mouths that gar have.

@ puglee62.

Any particular place I can get these hooks from?

I looked at BCF, don't seem to have them that small.

Chemically sharpen, long shank I suppose.

Cheers, Bondy

Big W and KMart at Logan Hyperdome don't stock them

One would have thought being a chain store it would stock the same , apparently not.
