Barramundi season reopens
News release | 30-Jan-2014

Queensland’s barramundi closed seasons will end at midday 1 February.

The barramundi closed seasons have been in force in the Gulf of Carpentaria since 7 October last year and 1 November for the east coast.

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol district officer Robert Ibell said the closed seasons were aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of the iconic fish species.

“The closures coincide with spawning periods and protect barramundi stocks during this vulnerable period of their life cycle,” Mr Ibell said.

“The closed seasons allow fish to spawn and stocks to replenish to ensure there are healthy fish stocks for current and future generations of Queenslanders.”

Mr Ibell said fishers are reminded to check the rules before dropping a line.

“During the open season, a minimum size limit of 58 cm, maximum size limit of 120 cm and a possession limit of 5 apply,” he said.
